i got the soundtrack to this a while ago for Eddies involvement but took me a while to actually go see the film, loved it when i did tho and its actually made the soundtrack better from seeing the movie. great film like, check it.

Spoiler: seems he had mental issues, and this could simply be a drawn out suicide during a breakdown, not sure how to take this now

I got the book today (i've pretty much read it all already) and people argued a point where he may have had mild schizophrenia but only in hindsight (no-one suspected anything of the sort in his company) and because he seemed so adamant to head into the wild and live off the land, knowing the dangers. It gives two examples of how this case compares to two other people, one of whom did have mental problems. The writer arrives at the conclusion (from interviews with other people and his sister) he didn't have any mental problems whatsoever and just got a little too caught up with the romantic notion of a Jack London-esque adventure in the wilderness.

The fact he tried to leave, in good health and in good spirits shows he wasn't a total mental case, imo. It was a series of almost insignificant coincidences and events and his own unpreparedness in his task that was his ultimate downfall.

People in Alaska hate him though, in the main.
Upon reading the book you sigh at almost every decision he makes but completely admire his feeling and outlook and life, it's so frustrating.
