Donnie Darko is an amazing film. there are so many different sides to it, and so many levels, that i think it's impossible for everyone to interpret it the same. thats why its great. it's kinda personal to every induvidual.

that is all

most people miss one important bit in the film.

first time frank comes to donnie he leads him down stairs and says "come with me and i'll show you the future" or something like that

and i take it to be that the full film is donnie seeing his future that he wont have because he is about to die - its like your life flashing before your eyes before you die but its the future and the last thing he sees is the engine thats going to kill him... and the whole thing about time travel is part of the whole him seeing the future as well as the engine that kills him

i may be wrong but thats what i think

I'm not saying yer wrong or not but considering your analysis, how would you explain how Frank has already been shot in the eye when they're in the theatre when donnie doesn't shoot him until near the end?

That Gary Jules is good eh?

It's a story of missed chances and might have beens!

Teaches us to live our lives not to squander them by being paralysed by the fear of what could happen.

Its up to us to shape our own fate.
