Dissolved vs The Kids
Okay... I think I speak for the rest of the band here.
On March 18th we played a gig at the Balcony. This was by far the worst gig we have ever played. We are supremely pissed off. The line-up changed for this gig several times before the night. It ended up something like: 3TR Dissolved TD Sika Don't be fooled by the mammoth bands... it truly wasn't that special. Firstly, we arrived to see about a dozen black-clad children hanging around outside the Balcony... and about 4 inside. After the bar-person in charge had made it very clear (several times nonetheless) that: THE ONLY PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 THAT WERE BEING PERMITTED TO STAY ON THE PREMISIS WERE THOSE IN A BAND. ANYONE WHO WAS UNDER 18 AND NOT PLAYING HAD TO LEAVE. ALSO, A CONGREGATION OF MINORS OUTSIDE WOULD RESULT IN THE WHOLE GIG BEING CANCELLED AS SUCH A THING WOULD ATTRACT POLICE ATTENTION. Obviously in the interests of the gig all of the bands complied… NOT. There were kids standing at the door all night popping in and out of the pub after being repeatedly told to stay away. Now I’m all for bands of all ages playing but unfortunately if they want a venue then they will have to abide by the venue’s rules. All of the Balcony’s regular customer’s left for the duration of the bands (I’m guessing it was something to do with children running around everywhere and an excessive amount of feedback coming from Sika’s determination to destroy everyone’s ears by wandering about in front of the PA speakers with very shit, very loud microphones.) After Sika’s set they left – taking their youthful fan-base with them. So =T.D= and ourselves (Dissolved) had the pleasures of playing to an audience of about 10 people (about 7 of which I knew personally.) To top it all off 3TR were playing another gig so they arrived about 30 mins after we had finished and played their set to the bored, drained and diminishing crowd. Now – I would hate to think of a world where you had to be 18 to get a gig anywhere other than a youth club or some shit. And I wish Sika, =T.D= and 3TR all the best finding gigs in the future. However because of all the hassle, drama and goddamn unproffessionalism involved Dissolved will be performing no more gigs with the younger bands unless it has been well organised and the age matter is considered before the bands turn up. Again, good luck to you all, and I’m sorry it has to be this way. I hope this post has not offended anyone that didn’t deserve to be offended. |

Kev, I'm not trying to start a fight here man. Colin, Adam and myself are extremely grateful for all the gigs you've sorted out for us in the past.
This is not a dig at Sika, or any other band for that matter. |

Dude, why so defensive?
This isn't about who was playing, this isn't about the PA. It's just about the issue of gigs and age restrictions. I just wanted to lay down the facts so everyone would understand why we don't want any more gigs like that. |

I turned up to this gig and was extremely dissapointed, with the size of the crowd and with the sound. As far as i know the Balcony is an over 18 venue unless you ask permission months in advance. Last edited by ArchFlameTera : 22nd March 2005 at 02:46 PM. |

Can i just say something, i also am in Dissolved, and while i echo some of James' points i think this is mostly a knee-jerk reaction to a shocker of a gig, from all angles. We and i'm sure everyone playing or listening, left with egg on our faces. And those eggs were off.
We, as a community need to fight alongside each other in the hope that we give any band out there a chance to succeed, we would all ask for the same thing. Age/Sex/Race/Weight/Hair Colour, all irrelevant. We love music. That is all. So if it is to be an 14+ affair the venue needs to know, if some bands are u18 then similar applies. What we dont want to do is remove music and the possibility of playing live to our under 18 brethren, just the bar-owning folks who really allow it to happen (westie, drouthy's, balcony etc...) deserve to be kept informed of the situation. That way they can continue to let people play, and have folk turn up in their pub to see their mate's band or maybe even just to see a band cos they like them. Lets remember that these guys would be better off running a sports theme bar if they wanted to make huge pots o' cash. Instead they give the underground music scene a chance because they want to do whats right by music. We, as musicians and music fans, should be working with them. Colin (Dissolved) Rock on people!
