Formed in Largs in 2003, Blind Pew - Andy McGregor (lead vocals/keyboard), Paul McGranaghan (guitar/vocals), Stu McIntosh (bass/vocals) and Del Lamont (drums) – typically ‘rocked’ their way free of small town life. The four met at school and have been playing together ever since. For the most part now based in Glasgow, the band’s prosaic beginnings have led to a musical career that’s anything but generic. Their own, irreverent brand of rock – stylings that have drawn comparisons to the likes of The Rolling Stones and The White Stripes – has been readily met with the enthusiasm of critics and crowds alike. Support slots with long-time friends Dogs Die In Hot Cars, Kid Symphony and Three Unstrung, as well as airplay on BBC Radio Scotland and XFM Scotland (formerly Beat 106 FM), raised the band’s profile and paved the way for the well-received EP ‘You’re Claimed’. Recorded and released in 2005 on the band’s own label Smokey Bear Records, ‘You’re Claimed’ consists of three new songs and re-workings of two older songs from the earlier album ‘Fear of God’, described in a 4/5 List review as “a fantastically infernal racket of a record.” (May 2004) The EP is the product of a collaboration with London-based producer Gordon Rintoul (Paul Weller/Tori Amos/The Vaselines/BMX Bandits). Using an ‘outside’ influence was a new experience for the band, more used to working with their own frontman McGregor behind the controls. Rintoul returned to his native Glasgow to record ‘You’re Claimed’ at Cava Studios after hearing a Blind Pew demo. Nothing else needs to be said... go see this band! Live Music Direct, Live Review, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, 10.02.2006 Like Jack Black’s Tenacious D, Blind Pew successfully mix their black comedy lyrics with some dirty Rock n’ Roll rhythms which are worthy of a comparison to some of Britain’s most loved rock acts. Definitely a band to watch out for.
