See that's more like it. I remember playing at Steppenwolfe in Leven of all places. We got free booze, a lock-in, a carry out and £120. I seem to remember Bannermans in Edinburgh paid us for playing. We got paid in the Venue and Studio 24 too. The Union in Dundee pays I think.

My point is that by accepting so little for so long the local bands have unwittingly engineered a situation whereby other people cream off the profits from the band's hard work.

This state of affairs is not peculiar to Dundee but it is certainly more prevalent there than in other places.

Someone should set up a Dundee bands union. You could go on strike. Lol. Any scab band who crossed the picket line and played somewhere for less than an agreed sum would be forever ostracised by their peers.

P.S. Having said all that I would pay to play in the Westie just to hear some nuggets of genius from Stu, ken?

haha yeah i know what you mean though he was very chilled out at our gig on sat till Rush Hour Soul had some kind of stage invasion and he hit the panic buttons

I know what you mean though on the whole not getting paid etc,i cant think of a way around it apart from refusing to play the venue.Theres so little venues in Dundee as it is that most bands wouldnt want to go down this avenue.
We travelled up to Aberdeen to play Drummonds for some charity gig wich left us paying petrol etc but i suppose theres always exceptions.

Good to see healthy debate about all this.

The DJs / bands point was particularly interesting. You'd be very hard pressed to book an up-and-coming DJ for free, let alone 3 or 4 for the same night!

For "Dundee" you can replace with "Scotland" or any other city. The situation is similar everywhere. Bands are too eager.

The point about gigging further afield is also true.

Considering how well a lot of bands (like The View, The Rise, guitar indie bands etc) would be received in north England, bands like that should definitely try to hook up with other similar bands in Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, York, etc. There's a huge 'market' for it just now as the NME is as pro-Brit indie as it's ever been, which is why The View may well be very successful.

The hardcore bands would go down amazingly well further south. Eg. I've passed cdrs of Kaddish & Perineum onto friends in south england and the reaction is the same - 'fucking hell they're amazing! how come they're not massive?! etc.'

There's plenty of bands in Dundee that although I don't like musically, I'm more than happy to give contacts to & help out. But if I mentioned on this board 'I don't really like band x', band x will then probably start an argument about it.

Dundee lacks the infrastructure of Glasgow & Edinburgh, so I would definitely back & encourage the likes of Fat Sams and what they're trying to do. At the same time, you should never sell yourself short. Like binary guy says, DJs dont play for free. If they review the payment option in the future that would be a good start.

It's a tricky issue alright. I think some bands are too embarrassed to ask to be paid sometimes. I hink a lot of bars see a DJ as a cheap or safe option - your average punter is unlikely to walk out the door due to a DJ, but may be scared off by a band they don't like, which isn't good for business. DJs will only continue to get paid for as long as they are bringing in punters and thus making the bar money.

Like my man G said upthread, getting gigs outside of Dundee will do more good than any gig in Dundee will ever do you. You might even get paid for your efforts. I always make sure i pay out of town bands from the door takings, and will pay a modest guarantee if requested in advance.

Though the idea of pubs thinking the can make money off bands is amusing, especially as the same pubs will often turn around and decide they can't be bothered with it a few months down the line.

It's not cheap being in a band, and as much fun as it is, why should you be out of pocket when helping other people make money?

Secondly, i was under the impression the balcony did loadsa free gigs (naturaly unpaid) in order to encourage new (sometimes up and coming) bands to get their first gigs going. Its definetly a venue for bands that play for the sake of playing for the fun of it rather than making cashka.

I don't think anyone's saying you shouldn't play free gigs, i think it's more a case of that you should look at each gig and actually think about why you're doing it. Some gigs are worth doing for free for fun, but on other occasions it may be more appropriate to get paid.
