Gigs this week (w/b 5th May) at Cabaret Voltaire...

FRI 5 MAY - KUBICHEK! :: THE MOTORETTES

Fresh touring with Futureheads and Editors Kubichek! return to the Cabaret Voltaire for the only Scottish date of their headline tour.

This is what Drowned In Sound had to say about Kubichek!...

"Kubichek! formed in early 2004 after dissolving their previous band and without so much as a backwards glance, locking themselves in a room and writing a shed load of abrasive ‘pop’ songs. Emerging occasionally to play a handful of well received gigs around the North of England they are currently riding on the back of some very positive praise indeed. Most intriguingly however while Kubichek! rock like a proverbial illegitimate there’s still more than a hint of their original dance-rock roots.”

SUN 7 MAY - WHIRLWIND HEAT :: DAMN SHAMES :: BLACKOUTS

Whirlwind Heat is a band whose story you should already know. They are not the new Gang of Four or New Order. They are three kids from Grand Rapids, Michigan who happened to catch the eye of Jack White four years ago. But there's no point in repeating all this. If you're looking for history go rent Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

MON 8 MAY - ASTRID WILLIAMSON :: THE MARS PATROL :: CALLEL

Imagine a place where the stimulating strangeness of Radiohead might meet the melodic sensuality of Suzanne Vega, where the soul-bearing intensity of a cult singer-songwrtier like Lisa Germano might melt into the funky ambiences conjured by Daniel Lanois, where the minimalist keyboard backwash of Erik Satie might drift across the surreal landscapes of Laura Veirs.

Shetland born ASTRID WILLIAMSON’s third solo album, Day of the Lone Wolf, is the place where all these magical sounds, and more besides, have finally come together, to rub one up against the other, collide and spark brightly, illuminating the darker corners of the human heart.

THE MARS PATROL will perform an acoustic set, and there'll also be a live set from CALLEL

SAT 13 MAY - NATHAN FAKE

NATHAN FAKE (yes, it's his real name) was born and brought up in Norfolk, England. Nathan has been playing and writing music since he was a young teenager. In late 2003, when he was twenty-two years old, he released his first record, Outhouse, on Border Community. Since then he has also released singles on Saw recordings and Traum Schallplatten, and has also put out his debut album.

Nathan plays live sets on his laptop, and has played in places including Berlin, Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam. Now he is coming to Edinburgh. Nathan Fake is not a DJ, never has been and probably never will be.

MON 15 MAY - THE HANDSOME FAMILY

Cabaret Voltaire are proud to host THE HANDSOME FAMILY in an intimate and exclusive Scottish show prior to the release of their new CD "Last Days Of Wonder", due out at the end of May.

Until recently, a well-kept secret - but the patronage of Ringo Starr on USA chat shows, sell out concerts across the UK and Europe, extensive coverage in the national press and high profile appearances on top-rated BBC TV and radio shows that include The Jonathan Ross Show, Andy Kershaw's world music show and Later With Jools Holland have changed all that.

Their music is designed to "rip holes in the veil between this world and the next with its songs of haunted Wal-Marts, lovers who chase the fire in streetlights, the madness of very deep holes, a lake that can only be visited in dreams, and the shadows that whisper inside a modern office building".

The subject matter of their songs are without equal and have earned the band praise from many quarters. In a recent report on American folk music for Granta, Greil Marcus described how Rennie's lyrics have "in their everyday surrealism, no parallel in contemporary writing", while Brett's vocals "mine the deep veins of fatalism in the Appalachian voice".
