Great Lake Swimmers @ Feedback 12th May
![]() Great Lake Swimmers Toronto's Great Lake Swimmers are an amazing outfit playing a brand of ambient folk strikingly similar to that of Iron & Wine. Lead Swimmer Tony Dekker's a startlingly literal wordsmith, his songs stark and atmospheric, yet lyrically generous. His warm tenor will disarm you in the delicate, understated, acoustic environs of his musical world. Their sound finds its roots in classic folk music, with more than a hint of Nick Drake. Throw in a pinch of Neil Young's quieter moments and a touch of Cass McCombs and My Morning Jacket at their most sedate, and the result is the gorgeous sound of Great Lake Swimmers. They played Feedback in November and all who were there were mesmerised by the band's quiet power. The reverby echo of Dekker's vocals is the perfect accompaniment for a dark night on a moonlit porch or a long drive lit only by the dim glow of headlights. It's a sound to be soaked in at Feedback. Superkings The Superkings are a North West four-piece (including piano, strings and guitar), a confluence of influences ranging from David Bowie, Nick Cave and Paul Simon to Pavement and Neutral Milk Hotel. They are an intricate, bitter-sweet piano-pop outfit, taking in slow, darkly-melodic love songs as well as upbeat, jazz-imbued indie gems. They have become live favourites in their respective hometowns playing prestigious support slots with Jeffrey Lewis, Okkervil River, Isobel Campbell, Great Lake Swimmers, and Jim Noir. They've since been invited to play at a high-profile HMV showcase in Manchester next month. The Headlines The Headlines are a very talented young local band with a sound akin to Pavement, although this came as a surprise to the band when we told them! Nevertheless, they are well worth catching. They have played a number of times at Feedback, winning great acclaim in the process, and so it's with great pleasure that we have them back again to support a great headline act. Mollie Baxter We're also pleased to invite Mollie Baxter, a well-regarded member of the local music community, to Feedback for the first time. Mollie's repertoire is a mix of rock, folk and acoustic.
