Haram, Violent Breakfast, Night and The City..Wed 16th Aug @Subway Edinburgh
Haram (USA)
Few current acts can match the intensity and vibrancy of Haram. It’s members boast an impressive hardcore pedigree, a resume that spans a decade and over 1000 shows between the individual members with stints in Majority Rule, Pg. 99, City of Caterpillar and Malady. Haram mines disparate facets of punk and noise to conjure something wholly cohesive and engaging. Dual guitars roil and churn, while the bass and drums form a kinetic and explosive rhythm section. Unrelenting and forward, Haram possesses a mature, tempered confidence often lacked within the youthful hardcore scene. Their debut lp is available now through Lovitt Records in the US and Adagio in Europe. www.harammusic.com http://www.myspace.com/harammusic Night and The City of Broken Promises (Wales) Wales’ Night and The City of Broken Promises deliver urgent punk rooted hardcore in a style most reminiscent of the great Mohinder or comparable to their Norwich based contemporaries the Mock Heroic. They combine the frantic assault with more plaintive calm passages calling to mind slint, giving the audience a moment to collect their thoughts before plunging once more into the fray. Both their self released 10” and split 7” with fellow Welshmen The Take are beautifully packaged, demonstrating a comitment to the DIY ethic that goes beyond mere lip service. These boys were due to play for us before, but their tour turned into a bit of a disaster and they never made it past Barnsley, so come along and give them a warm reception. www.nightandthecityofbrokenpromises.tk Violent Breakfast (Italy) Perhaps it’s a result of the tumultuous political system, perhaps its because their football league is riddled with corruption, perhaps it’s the gaudy Rai Uno making ITV look like the last bastion of intelectual TV programming. Whatever the reason, the youth of Italy seem to be pretty frustrated. As a resukt they have produced some of the best hardcore bands of the decade so far, particularly in the realms of Skramz (look no further than La Quiete and Raein). Violent Breakfast continue this trend, Its Skramz, but with a distinct Italian flavour. Fast, frantic, but and the same time bursting with unexpected melodic breaks, uplifting and life affirming. Check them out on the Emo Apocalypse 12” out now on React With Protest Records. www.violentbreakfast.org http://www.myspace.com/violentbreakfast +local support tbc Wednesday 16th August 7.30pm over 14+s Subway Cowgate xTape Swapx in Full effect. Violent Breakfast were awesome, the set seemed total short as fuck though. Picked up their full length, fucking quality.
The Gas Giant were pretty sound as well, kinda like Godspeed mixed with a lighter Red Sparowes. Couldn't afford their CD though... Sound night, felt like piss though. |

gas giant = amazingly very good. bought their cd. hope to see them again soon.
violent breakfast = not quite as good as chopfest, although the smaller, inactive crowd was probably a factor there (as was my inebriation and the room size at said nottingham festival). picked up teh fourway with socrates on it. haram = much better than at chopfest. still not that engaging though. cheers cdh folk! |
