Idlewild @ Fat Sam's, 28th November
That's a wednesday, holmes.
£15 but I'm still looking forward to it, I've still not seen them ever, partly because they've played here once or something! I'm a little scared though because I've heard so many bad things about them live in the last couple of years. http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/event/... minorcatid=1 But i'm sure they'll be in Groucho's soon enough if not already so don't buy it off ticketfucker because they add about one million pounds to it. |

Roddy's new album is pretty good actually, I was expecting the worst because the last Idlewild really was dire but it was much simpler, less cheesy and more folky/scottish.
I'm really really hoping the new Idlewild record is good, they've written some of my favourite songs. |

Johnny, if you've never seen them before you'll probably enjoy them. They're only rubbish live now in comparison to the writhing on the floor playing guitar with teeth days. I didn't even bother buying the last album, which is quite sad considering 5 or 6 years ago they were probably my favourite band. A couple of people have said they've been making encouraging noises about the new album, though, so we'll see.

I thought they split up?
They stopped being the idlewild i knew and loved when Bob left. This'd be £15 pounds to tarnish my memories of seeing them when i was a teenager. Last edited by Tommy Sports : 22nd September 2006 at 01:48 AM. |

I know Bob's not part of the equation anymore and that's it's par for the course for people to say they're not as good as they used to be *but* imo the Scottish music scene needs bands like Idlewild, The Zephrys, etc. I mean it's that or hype bands with no substance (the royal we, shit disco) or chas & dave style pop/rock like The Fratellis.
I'll definitely check out the new album when it's released and I'd be pleased if it surprises a few people. I hope they keep at it and do well. |

Personally, I feel that Roddy Woomble has developed his songwriting and has become one of the countries best songwriters. His lyrics are always good, and while I may sometimes pine for the Idlewild of 9 years ago, I'm glad that we have gained a songwriter of Roddy's caliber.
They always seemed to me to be a band that would evolve to have songs more structured around melody, and wishing that a band had stayed the same as they were when they first started is just selfish. They are a different band now, so I wouldn't expect them to writhe around the floor when they play live now, and aside from a few songs on the last album, the quality of their songs has always been good, and they world would be a poorer place without a band like this. After all, they have managed to last this long. How long will the Fratellis last? E. |
