Hey KJ, I'm assuming that this address ends up in your email box. You probably just about remember me from the Applied Computing days. Anyway I've been meaning to drop you an email for a while about your involvement with Underground Scene and an organisation I'm involved with, Free Culture UK [1].

Free Culture UK is a grass roots organisation set up to promote an open, participatory culture, based on balanced copyright and intellectual property laws that do not adversely stifle creativity or innovation. Part of what we do can be thought of as applying the tenets of Free Software into the creative arts. Importantly; when we say Free, we mean Freedom, not 'without cost'.

I have recently begun to co-ordinate our activities in Dundee/Scotland [2], and have been trying to build up a community of local artists, musicians and technologists willing to engage in various Free Culture activities. Clive Gillman (director of the DCA) and Gair Dunlop (course leader in Electronic Imaging/Animation at the DOJ) have already expressed an interest in working with us. We have also had some interest from New Media Scotland. There is an open meeting being held at the DCA on the 9th of November [3] aimed at building a group of people interested in experimenting with art and technology, distributed creativity, and open source software tools such as Audacity[4].

There are a number of other projects we wish to start, the main one aims to promote a remix culture and the Creative Commons [5] through remix events ( e.g. Remix Reading [6] ). These events have helped us encourage artistic creativity by allowing artists and musicians to create new works by remixing the works of others. Creative Commons licenses are applied to all the works, and they are then distributed freely online via the projects website where they are syndicated around the Internet. Many artists involved have found these events enlightening, seeing it as a way of both fostering their creativity and gaining exposure, whilst exploring the various issues concerned with copyright and copyleft.

Knowing about your longtime involvement with UGS, I have been meaning to contact you about these ideas and projects for some time. Is this something either you or any members/musicians you know would be interested in participating with?

We meet regularly, our next one is scheduled for Wednesday 18th October 7:30pm - Laings Bar, Roseangle, if you're interested (or know anyone who might be) be sure to come along.

Clive Gillman (director of the DCA) is a really interesting guy, who strangely enough taught Javis Cocker once upon a time.
