Yes, but I've been to far too many electronica shows where the prevailing attitude was one of splendid isolation when it comes to the music on offer.

I actively seek out new music at these things and if I hear something I like, I'll ask the DJ what it is.

With the "the whole point of djing is no requests" attitude is that the DJ is some unapproachable uber denzien of taste and that whatever they are playing is way cooler than anything you could even think about asking for so don't even bother. And woe betide you if you don't know what they're playing because then you're just showing how uncool you are.

real dj'ing is about making the night flow seamlessly,bringing the crowd to a crescendo and then dropping in a delicious beat that makes everyone think at the same time 'fucking right' and then begin to dance fiercley.
in my opinion.
Its not about attitudes or posing,its about making sure everyone has a damm good time.

dj's only usually do requests at weddings and to be honest you'd be well cheaper and more sensible to make a mix cd for a wedding and press play.

Well I don't know about you, but I wouldn't go up to Carl Cox or Bong-Ra, or a band for that matter, who is playing a set and ask could they please play xxxx

That doesn't make sense. Did you read my reply? I never said that DJ's should play requests.

It's the attitude that the DJ is the last bastion of taste, which is what seems to be promoted here. That you can't even speak to the DJ.
At no point have I ever said that I expect DJ's to play requests.

The best DJ's I've heard are more than happy to share their setlist with you (or they have at the best club nights I've been at), and if you hear a great tune, you should be able to ask the DJ what it is.
I've discovered many great acts this way.
This, is my point.

In this thread, it seemed like the DJ is being held aloof, and I like to get info from the DJ. After all, if they are DJing, it's because they know the music, and like playing interesting things that fit with the night. They don't have to play requests, because people will be asking them what they are already playing.

I don't expect DJs to play requests.

My bad, your post confused me on that.
I guess some dj's will hang around and chat to folk and some won't, same with any performer though, it's not an attitude in only one genre or career.

I didn't get the vibe that the dj was being held aloof, but then I don't know if the dj posts here or their username if they do, and didn't get that impression from any posts made by other people myself.

playing: playing your songs on instruments
producing: refers to producing in the mixing/mastering sense
mixing: setting levels for master

dj:

playing: playing a set of mixed-together (beatmatched) records/ tunes
producing: creating your own shit electronically from scratch
mixing: mixing two songs together as part of a mix/ mixtape

an all this, btw, came out of me trying to post posts about new shit ive heard and wanting others to listen to aswell, but OHHH NOOOO thats badd badd!! coz these people would rather listen to the same stuff, and are faaaaaar to superior to be reccomended tunes, and this is why they want to go to clubs ... and (as they know best) make.... requests !!!! ...?

bold bit = actually makes alot of sense, but when they are playing their set, its up to them how they put it together and where they are heading to climax, etc. so the last thing any dj will want is someone making requests - like the bouncers would even let you near enough!!
