Just make sure you don't go through Twisted Ape because they rip off bands by charging them £100 to play

Paying to play sucks, but if Kelvin from Twisted Ape likes you he will give you a good support slot with somebody. Honestly, I saw it happen last week. This band play the showcase at the Cathouse with TA, and fair enough they have to pay 100 quid but they shifted 20 tickets and made most of it back. They play the gig and after the show they get offered a support with Blue Print at the Barfly. Not bad if you ask me.

If you don't mind paying then I would recommend it for the one time only, maybe two. Don't make a habit of it, but it doesn't hurt to give it a shot.

As far as Kelvin goes, he is trying to make a living but he doesn't just fling bands on and leave it at that. He gives them a listen (more than many) and if he likes you he will give you more and better gigs.

Just the way I see it. I am not saying he is God's gift to the unsigned bands of Scotland mind, he is a promoter. He puts gigs on and tries to make money doing it so he can keep on doing it.

We also owe you a gig so I will try and help you out

We done two showcase gigs at the Cathouse about 2 years ago and the first time we made a shitload more money than we had to pay. If you make the effort everybody comes off good. We also got another gig there on the strength of our showcase. The thing is, Dundee is pretty far away from Glasgow for selling tickets, much more so than Stirling or Falkirk

Hey there sports fans

I got the number for twisted ape dude when we played thru in Glasgow the other week.
& I think £100 would be allright as long as made some back & put in a good show,
If not then I'd say "up ye!"

I can see where you're coming from, but the thing is that he only puts on bands for big supports if they regularly pulla big crowd for his gigs. We know this because we've been playing gigs at the Barfly and Tut's for a while but getting a support out of Kelvin is like getting blood out of a stone, whereas the shite bands that are 14 who have loads of mates from school always get the big support.

Also, the man totally leaves it up to the bands to get the crowd along. He doesn't advertise any of his local gigs- only the big ones with signed bands that he's put on himself, so he oculd put on more effort that way. Basically, i think it's shocking that he charges bands £100. What if (and this happens a lot) bands get loads on the door but don't sell any of their tickets? Do bands see any of this money? No. Twisted Ape are the only promoters outside of London who charge bands to play gigs. Young bands who really want to play at the Cathouse will pay this money and be ripped off. I will only do a gig for the man if it's a big support and he charges nothing and that's a definate.

Fair deal for local bands!

Yeah weve not done any gigs with Kelvin for a while now as we seem to have got our foot in the door at the barfly and king tuts (touch wood) and we can organise our own shows in the 13th note cafe but i hope Miko remembers that it was Kelvin who helped us out in the early days of a close last by giving us gigs whenever we asked him, sometimes it wasnt pay to play and he gave us some advice aswell which was appriciated. He could maybe be a bit better organised at times but then im not a promoter and i dont know the ins and outs of it all. He doesnt do pay to play ALL the time and although i am dead against it must be hard working without a financial safety net so maybe thats why he does it now and again?

It's only £80 he askes for so it's about 20 tickets you need to sell. A pain in the ass but if you only do one every few months it's not hard to get 20 folk out. Plus in the cathouse you're almost gauranteed a top notch sound.

I appreciate the gigs that kelvin has put us on. I wouldn't do them every week though.

no band gets a good sound in the cattie.

i've seen the haunted, today is the day and mastodon there this year alone and the sound has been ropey every time.

saying that though, you have to say its nothing near as bad as strawberry fields!

for gigs in glasgow that aren't p2p, you could try iron mullet, mulletofsteel@yahoo.com (gigs at the 13thnote, west 13 afaik)
or ian wallace, thepod@hotmail.com (the vale, strawberry fields, jaspers (ex-nocturnes))

iron mullet are pretty good, playin a gig for them tonight, wee paul from pathogen runs it. i've never used ian wallace yet, but he's desperate to get heavy bands right now. the vale isn't such a heavy venue- more indie i think, strawberry fields is like playing in a big metal box, but jaspers is a great venue, a wee pub under the arches, sounds great. not been in it since it changed names, it used to be rough as fuck, but great fun, staff were great too.
you could also try entertainments@guu.co.uk for gigs in glasgow union

cheers

Callum (Dionysus & Achren)
