I'd agree there, i've been using it for a wee while, and its great when you dont have acess to a decent set of mics! (why i need it). It sounds even better than the tech21 BDDI for recording, which is nice

its sounds better than any amp/cab i've ever miced up bar the svt itsself, the room sounds on it are a bit guff though, but you can always run it through something else. Thanks again for the suggestion!

I'm trying out SONAR right now, which seems to be quite powerful, but the learning curve for some aspects of it seem to be much steeper than they should be. It doesn't help that they bombard you with toolbar buttons and menus. I shouldn't have to look in the help file, or mouse over every single fucking button just to change the metronome settings.

What's the standard way to work when you're recording guitars and have one of those cab simulators available. Do you just record your guitar clean and apply any effects you want in your DAW?

All that said, at the moment, there's not much point in me getting any of these plug-ins, as I'm recording through a shitty gaming headset microphone at the moment. Garbage in, garbage out, and all that.
The most common methods of direct guitar recording are either to run a di box > mic pre > convertor or some sort of interface with an instrument input. Either of these methods will ensure that the impedance is matched. Record it in clean with no clipping then use some sort of VST amp simulator to get the sounds you want. Micing up cabs sounds alot better if it's done right, but it's not a quick or a cheap option.

Personally i use Nuendo, It's exactly like cubase but with more powerful editing, although it doesn't seem to be a popular choice around these parts. Logic seems to be the professional musicians choice and pro-tools (not m-powered) is the industry standard for bigger studio's.

Some stuff I've been working on at home.

Recorded the acoustic and electric using a shitty condenser mic, through the m-audio mobile pre. Recorded the bass through Ampeg SVX.

Pity my playing's kind of shit :P

I'm a tard. I just remembered I have a cable lying around that I can use to connect the headphone socket on my multi-effects pedal (it's also a preamp), to the line-in on my PC, which sounds a lot better. (although obviously still pretty shit in the grand scheme of things)

Also downloaded the demo version of guitar rig, it sounds awesome. Got a better idea of what I'm going to want to buy when I get the money/if I win the lottery.

Thanks very much! I'm gonna re-record the whole thing, because I'm convinced I could do better from a performance side of things.

On another note, I downloaded Amplitube and wasn't that impressed really. Might give Guitar Rig a shot, because laying down tracks quickly and having to mic up my amp can be a pain. Amplitube just seemed really cheesy, a lot of the 'stompbox' effects were kind of poop too (I like the fact that the delay oscillates though).

Ampeg SVX is mighty impressive though!

Thats cool I was surprised you hadnt heard of it !

I thought the room sounds (im guessing your meaning the ambience slider thing?) was alright. Well, if you were playing the bass by itself. But yeah, if recording with anything else, it really takes the bass out of the mix and makes it all sound a bit gash!

I just thought the reverb sounded a bit cheezy, the SIR with a decent impulse can sound much more like a room.

This is a work in progress on a song I've been working on recently. It's for Blasphemous Necrorapist, so it's still intended to be a parody, but I've been working on trying to get a better sound, and put a bit more effort into the writing side of things.

I'm finding it difficult to finish because I can't resist the temptation to layer more and more guitar parts over stuff I've recorded already, rather than write new parts of the song (as the godawful mixing will testify to). That and I still need to think up lyrics that take the piss out of black metal, but without ripping off "Impaled Northern Moonforest" too much.

Unlike the other stuff, it was recorded in Sonar, using Guitar Rig for the guitar sounds, and recording the headphone output from my multi-effects pedal directly, instead of using a shitty microphone to mic up my shitty amp. I've also made use of the new 7 string I purchased last month.

Also spot the blatent rip off of "At the Gates - Blinded by fear" right at the end.
