best thing to do is experiment, there's no right and wrong way of recording you just have to fanny about until you find something you like! Their are tried and tested methods but if you just have one mic then try it in different positions around the instrument and see what gets you the best results. Its time consuming but good fun and a good way to learn!

If you're using a 57 for vocals you might wanna make yourself a little popshield, stretch a pair of tights over a coathanger and tape it to the mic stand in front of the mic. Experiment a bit. |

I'd probably suggest using a different mic for vocals unless you're a girl? The 57 is pretty good with handling female vocals. Males need something that'll pick up the warmth of the male voice a bit more.
However, if its the only mic you have, try what I did. I used my shower as a vocal booth. All you need is a few coathangers, a few cushions (suspended on the coathangers) and maybe a duvet or semi-thick sheet. Play around a bit first though, sometimes having the treatment up is a bad idea and you lose alot of the tonal variation. As mentioned before, just experiment, but most of all, have fun!! |
