Finally got around to buying sm57

Any tips on using this mic to record vocals, guitar, percussion? I live in multi where space is an issue so hanging duvets on every wall isn't really an option.

best thing to do is experiment, there's no right and wrong way of recording you just have to fanny about until you find something you like! Their are tried and tested methods but if you just have one mic then try it in different positions around the instrument and see what gets you the best results. Its time consuming but good fun and a good way to learn!

I know you are right of course but what are the minimal things I can at least do to treat the room in someway to stop unwanted reflections? I don't even have good acoustics in the bathroom.

go into the bedroom, prop the matress up behind the mic when you're recording vocals, if the room sounds nice recorded use the mics further away, if it sounds bad use em closer. Hanging up matress's is pretty minimal and is only really gonna make any difference to high end reflections.

If you're using a 57 for vocals you might wanna make yourself a little popshield, stretch a pair of tights over a coathanger and tape it to the mic stand in front of the mic. Experiment a bit.

madzombieguy is on a distinguished road
I'd probably suggest using a different mic for vocals unless you're a girl? The 57 is pretty good with handling female vocals. Males need something that'll pick up the warmth of the male voice a bit more.

However, if its the only mic you have, try what I did.

I used my shower as a vocal booth. All you need is a few coathangers, a few cushions (suspended on the coathangers) and maybe a duvet or semi-thick sheet. Play around a bit first though, sometimes having the treatment up is a bad idea and you lose alot of the tonal variation.

As mentioned before, just experiment, but most of all, have fun!!

you're not gonna pick up any 'warmth' with a cheapo condensor, thats the only alternative at that price. A 57 through a half decent pre will piss all over the majority of the cheap nasty chinese shit.

I took the aforementioned advice with the coathanger and a pair of tights. Works perfectly.
