recording of wednesday
I sent two vocal mics to channels two and three on a yamaha 16 channel mixer, panned them both hard left. I sent left out of the yamaha to line in track 1 of a Boss Br-1180 digital recorder. I sent the left line out of the boss directly to a crown amp that was connected to a jbl cabinet for monitoring the vocals. I sent a Roland dr-10 hyper cardioid mic to channel 4 on the yamaha mixer, panned hard right and sent main right on the yamaha to line in on track 2 of the recorder. I placed the roland mic between the bass amp and drums. I faced the guitar amp toward the roland mic. I recorded about 30 seconds of a song, listened to the mix and adjusted the mic placement. I did this 3 times before getting a desirable mix. We then hit record and let it fly. We recorded 10 songs like this and I was really surprised by the sound when I got the Boss home and hooked it up to a pair of Edirol near field monitors. The vocals are scarey clean on track 1. A little muffled on track 2 because the monitor was facing away from the roland mic but by bringing up track 1 into the mix...Presto...there it is!...a really good sounding mix.

yes! it was. The next time we get together, I'm going to record with two different 8-tracks. On my fostex 8, I'm going to put vocals on track 1 and guitar on track 2. On the bass player's Boss 8-track, I'm going to put bass on track 1 and drums on track 2. When I start recording, I'm going to make a sound that both machines will pick up. After the recordings are complete, I'm going to put the boss tracks 1&2 onto the Fostex in 3&4. Digital scrub track 1 and find the sound that I put on both machines. Enter start point and end point will be however minutes the recording end is. The to point will be wherever the first sound is on track 3. Then move and paste tracks 3&4....Presto....all tracks should be synchronized. I would love to send you an mp3. How?

I used to use a Roland VS-840-EX recorder, very good machine even though it did record onto 'Non-more-retro' 250mb Zip Disks.
I now do everything on my MacBook. |

I'm recording with a boss BR-1180. Nice sounding machine. I load tracks from it onto a PC with "Audacity" audio software. I don't have a lot of memory on my desktop. 512 M. Is there another software program I could download for free off of the internet for audio that doesn' need a lot of memory to function well?
