Christmas/2010 Wishlists
Hey there
So...gearwise...what are you all getting for Christmas, or in 2010? Next year, I reckon it's a new PC and an UA 1176. If I do get these then this will be my wack. Oh...possibly an RE20 or an SM7b too. ![]() Zipps |

hey, you should maybe consider listening to 441's instead of 421's, they are seriously nicer on toms, the cymbal spill works much better. Amazing bass and vocal mic too, snare even! great all rounder.

From what I've read, you couldnae go wrong with the AT4033. Royer 121 - Ouch! Sell a kidney. The FMR stuff is good for the price. I have 2 RNCs and I like them. Typically, once I get something like this, everybody begins to rave about the PBC-6A. It's a pity you're not in the market for 2 RNPs otherwise I would have suggested you go for Sytek MPX-4Aii instead. This would sting you about £700 from the US including shipping and import duty and, in addition to having 4 channels, is considered by many to be a step up from an RNP. You don't get HiZs with the Sytek mind you. Whatever the case, both Sytek and FMR stuff is built by someone (the company owner) who is passionate about making good gear. I reckon you're gonna be as skint as me this coming year. ha ha. And wanna know something, I've done pretty much fackall with my gear this past year due to other pressing issues I've had. I've still bought gear though. I need a clinic I do. |

Cheers on the offer of the shootout. I may take you up on that offer. I have plenty time just now before I can go for those mics. I need a bleeding car first. Next after the motor is my DAW PC. Your Cranesong Spider's the biggee there. You'd be lucky to get one for less than £5,000-£6,000. That's a good list though. A distressor would be interesting and a U47 would be dynamite of you got it for a grand or so. I've got a confession. I have sinned and got me one of them there ART Digital MPAs off of fleaBay. ![]() I was having a frugal moment and wanted some back up digital pres to go after my Neves and Sytek (when I get it). What I should have done is waited and got an API A2D. Probably still could and use the ART for ADAT. Have you ever considered the GTQ2 from Aurora Audio or the Brent Averill preamps? These are on my fantasy next decade list as is the Purple Audio MC77. Last edited by ZippsInc; 30th December 2009 at 08:47 PM. |

He refurbishes the odd Sytek here and there and plops them onto eBay. There was one last week but it was a 110v one. Here's a very interesting plugin versus hardware thread for you. 2-1176 vs MC77 vs UA 1176 Plugin! MP3's!!! - Gearslutz.com |

![]() Major hangover here today. Ha ha ha - I like to sleep with my gear. That space beside the bed is the only place I can keep the rack when not in use. I'll tell you what....having the gear racked is much tidier and allows for ease of portability rather than having things lying around all the time, dragging them from room to room and having stuff stacked on top of each other. Once I fill the 22 spaces with gear, leaving a few stratgic spaces for heat, I'm calling a halt to my purchases - will power permitting. Things to get - in red: Neve Portico 5012 + 5016 Sytek MPX-4Aii API A2D UA 1176 DBX 160x DBX 160x DBX 166 (old school) FMR RNC 1773 (x2) ART Digital MPA Samson S-Phone Headsphone Amp Samson S-Patchplus Patchbay RME MultifaceII (PCIe) 16 x XLR Panel PC Dual Boot XP/Win7 with 12GB RAM and 3x500GB HDs. That's £4000-£5000s worth to get. I have to say, the 1176 and API A2D (approx £2800 together) are fairly low on my priority list at the moment. I've decided I will only spring for them if I get more heavily involved in recording and need the extra quality preamps. The 1176 isn't a major issue due to having 2 UAD2 cards with most of the comps covered. As for mics. I only have: Shure KSM27 Shure SM58 Shure SM57 (x2) Shure SM81 Cascade Fat Head II Ribbon - with Lundhal Transformers (x2) Seeing as I don't do acoustic drums, I will likely only add another SM81 to complete the pair (for acoustic guitars) and then possibly get an SM7 or/and RE20. Dunno yet. Are you really considering going totally analogue? I've read that the maintenance is a costly pain. Last edited by ZippsInc; 1st January 2010 at 08:49 PM. |

Do you find that the sm7 can do anything that can't be done with an sm57 and a good pre with a bit of in the box eq tweaking? Just wondering what your thoughts on that were. Also...are you aware of the new Alan Parsons recording DVD set? http://www.artandscienceofsound.com/ It ain't getting good reviews in respect of the 6 clips available. Pretty basic apparantly. |

In reverse supposedly the modded 57 (boil the transformer off) sounds closer to the sm7. Personally i like to avoid any extreme eq-ing, as a rule - if i have to cut or boost more that 6db, something is far wrong whether it be microphone choice or placement. 24+ over eq'd tracks really clouds up your mix unless you're going for some sort of cloudy effect. Not aware of that DVD, sounds awesome! Not going to go totally analog, i'd just love to track to a 24 track 2" studer. Then transfer onto my computer. Any time i have done in the past it's been a bit of an eye (ear?) opener. There's just something about it that computers aint doing. Recording digitally is definitely more difficult, ribbon mics really help though. BTW. I'm one down on my wishlist.... and my new studio's almost finished!
