Mics and recording software
how come when i record my voice through a mic the quality is shite, also i need good recording software to put vocals onto an mp3 track, any recommendations?
I used to have cubase and fruity loops but have recently lost those during a hard drive crash.

What type of Mic do you have ?? If you are using a Dynamic mic the pick-up range may not be high there for you will need to give the Vocal a high lift with a Graphic EQ. You can do this with Editing Software but the software is normaly really expensive, you can get someone to edit the vocal recording for you this will cost around £70+ depending on what need done and whos doing it. This would be cheeper but if you are going to record alot then in the long run buying the Editing Software would be cheeper.
You also will be able to remove feedback and statik with the software making the lyrics more crisp. As far as Software depending on what you want it for and what Equipment you have the price can be huge. If you just have a MIC and are just recording Vocal I recomend "Cool Edit 2.0" it dose everything you need and recordings can be saved in WAV or MP3 Format. This is Multi-Track recording Software and there for you can add in a beat or sample and record over it with better quality. Use Multi-Track Software NOT a sound recorder !! You can buy "Cool Edit 2.0" online for around £200. There are loads more and better programs than this but they are expensive! Last edited by ||| EKIZEL ||| : 2nd May 2004 at 12:31 PM. |

Nothings expensive with the internet.
If you have broadband Kj then get a pragram called bearshare, download cubase and the other programs you lost off of that. Then just delete bearshare so you get no adware or anything. |

To make it sound better, stick a thin towel over the mic it should cut out a lot of the thumping 'Bs' and 'Ps'. I've always used Cakewalk or Cubase for recording but they may be a bot more than you need

This is all pretty much bullshit, dont use graphic eq's, dont use multitrack software if you dont need to multitrack. Get hold of a copy of sound forge if its for individual tracks. Cool edit, nuendo or logic are all good for multitrack stuff and work with most sound cards. Compression is useful for levelling out speech, you can dowload free plugins that have presets as a good starting point. i'll point you in the direction of some if you are interested. As for the mic, the industry standard radio presenters mic is EV-RE20 (dynamic mic) so he is wrong about that too. An Sm58 would probably sound as good as a cheap condensor and will only cost you £40 off ebay. |

Just record other tracks in a seperate box, then cut and special paste -> mix them. You have to get the timing spot on when you record though. But it sounds decent. |

One thing that no-ones mentioned yet is that the quality of your sound card plays a HUGE role in the quality of the recording. If your still using onboard sound (sound card built into motherboard) then ure gonna get a poppy, crackly mess. It can be fixed by tinkering with it in ure chosen editor (i use cubase) but it'll never be as clean and crisp as a card from the high end of the market.
On another note, if you ever need to record samples via a midi device to put onto tracks, i recommend Propellerheads Reason 2.5. It comes in at a hefty 425 bucks but as our good friend says, "Nothings expensive with the internet." If you dont know wot the hell reason is, lets just suffice to say that Mr Reznor of Nine Inch Nails uses it......and now, so do i. ![]() Mincherino. |
