Xbox question??

Hello...
Em, I was thinking about getting an Xbox, and adding a harddrive to it, to save games to, so I didn't need to shell out £40 for every game I buy, BUT I was wondering if Xbox Live would still work if I did this?? Anyone able to help me?

doesnt the xbox already have an internal hd. i'm sure it does, dont know the capacity. i think that if the architecture is designed like a PC, which i'm fairly sure it is then this shouldnt be a problem. However, when it comes to xbox live your machines individual id might be held on the HD which you'll prolly be removing, or its bios chip. if its the later, you should be fine, if not then you wont. i reccommend against doing this though cos your warranty will be shat. Probably the best option is to ask on some xbox boards.

edit : check this out looks like it'll be ok. you can also do this to the PS2.

You don't need to add a hard drive to it, it's already got a hard drive. The only reason you'd want to get a bigger hard drive, is if you were ripping pirate games to your hard disk, or if you were trying to make homebrew games for it.

Cool thanks for the help, nah I was wondering about a new hard-drive because I didnt know how big an Xbox game was, and assumed I would have to have a larger hard-drive if I wanted to save quite a few games to it

ok niall heres what i know,

all x-box games are dvd-9 (9.4 GB to be exact) but they are spread onto a 9 GB disc and all the pirate games you buy/download have beed put on to 4.7 discs. the internal hard drive in the x-box is 5GB! so thats one game, but to stick it on your harddrive you'll need to chip it and run a homebrew dashboard(evo is popular) in order to run homebrew apps such as (run/copy games from hd) etc. the chips are cheap because bill gates does not care to stop piracy as he just wants an x-box in every home and is willing to sacrifice everything for domination.

x-box live,

you'll need a 'switch' to turn of your chip after youv'e booted your game. then when you go on line as the server will 'scan' your x-box for a chip but the 'switch' will de-activate your chip. if you do not have a switch you will most likely get chucked off and banned from the server.

hope this helps

I got mine chipped last month with the on/off switch so i can go on live(but havnae bothered with live yet). the HD already in the xbox will only have enough room for one game(iv got halo2 on mine :-) ) also once its chipped you can if you want to play pirates save a game to your hard drive or a dvd film.
you'll also be able to play the emulators that availible on ebay(the reason i got mine done) so far i have been playing shit loads of old arcade games on mame and i now can play any sega master system/mega drive game, any nes/snes/n64 games, atari 2600,etc etc....... its the bee's knees!
this weekend i completed xmen arcade, turtles, alien V predator,Rtype!!!!!!!!(fuckin hard!) oh and playing bomb jack for hours on end! im in retro bliss i tell thee!

after xmass il get the 120g hd and then no need to swap disks! woo hoo!

can i just ask why you got an x-box just to play old console games?
plus you people are the reason why games are so expensive. just save your money and buy the real copy.

as far as I was aware(this is what Ive been told btw so it may be wrong) but the Xbox hard drive is a standard ide HD which you can remove, make an image of then load that image on to a new drive eg 250gb hard disk

This also works for TiVo boxes as I am told(TIVO boxes accept 2 IDE HD's allegedly!

As I say this is all stuff I have been told........hence dunno if it really works, hope its of some help

madfiddler is an unknown quantity at this point
The standard Xbox drive is now 8.4g

IF you chip it and replace the hard drive BEFORE signing up to XBox live, you'll be ok (just remember to turn the chip off when you do - or use a Xenium which asks you which bios you want to use on bootup).

If you upgrade your drive after signing up to XBox live you'll be banned as they keep a log of the serial number of your drive tied in to the serial number of you processor/bios/whatever.

I've just put a 160g drive in mine, but it looks like although the chip is only a few weeks old, the bios is older and only recognises it as a 137g drive. Dunno how to flash the bios either

i never realised the XBox architecture was that close to a PC's. i guess they are fairly similar. So is this a straight forward mod to do?

I think there are still some differences. From what I've heard, main memory and the memory on the graphics card is shared.
