vpn's
you set up a vpn (virtual private network) through XP. you've prolly already got a folder called shared files or something. i recommend checking out the ms site and do a search for 'setting up a vpn / virtual private network' and you'll get a tonne of info there
plus this way you'll be able to specify who can share files and who cannot.that should be one solution anyway.

I'd stick to MSN Messenger, easy to use, you can use Norton to check for viruses on it and it's secure. Don't dabble in VPNs or FTPs unless you got a good firewall ( and a bit of knowledge).
If you're only sharing a small amount of files Peer to Peer ( i.e. Messenger) is fine but if you're sharing a lot of files you could consider a virtual hard disk from somewhere like xdrive , http://www.xdrive.com. That way you'll have a hard disk you can both share but both of you don't need to be online |
