Buying a mobile abroad

I'm going to Hong Kong in a couple of weeks and I'm considering buying a new mobile while I'm there. I know that for the phone to work here, it should be triband but, apart from that, are there any things to watch out for?

some phones will not work at all in the UK.

the only reason I know this is from looking at mobiles on ebay and some specifically say they are from abroad and won't work in the UK.

It doesn't however say why! Which is rather unhelpful!

If you get a phone out there, it will probably play ALL console games, have a super mini dvd player in it and make you tea in the morning!

My sister just bought a special edition Hello Kitty phone from a foreign eBayer and it needs 2 batteries to keep all its pink lights flashing and LCDs of HK skiing all over it ...
