1Gig or 2Gig memory?

i dont know if i really need 2gig of memory to do graphic and webdevelopment... do you think 1gig of RAM should be enough to power Photoshop CS etc and do a bit of audio work, not to mention playing Doom 3 and LAN parties.... i need help, i feel so old tech has moved on so quickly.

Also processor wise...

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 560J w/ HT Technology 3.6GHz 1MB Cache

or will the Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 550 w/ HT Technology 3.4GHz 1MB Cache be sufficient? I dont want to go overboard if i dont really need to... besides i can upgrade in the future.

This is all for a laptop btw.

You can never have enough RAM KJ. I'd go fpr the "GB option. I've just ramped my PC up to that and what a difference it makes!!!

My processor is 3.2Ghz and Photoshop CS2 just flies when applying filters and shifting layers and masks about. Some of the files I'm working on have 50+ layers and are massive!!!

And if its for a laptop your gonna have to go as far as you can, its all well saying you can upgrade later, but why get a lower spec and then wish you HAD gone for the top spec and have to wait until later before you get the upgrade.

you'll probably notice the difference more from the ram

ive got a p4 3.2ghz with 1mb cache, and 1Gb ram, im gonna up it to 2 Gb in the near future, want a decent sound card first tho

and, well, if your ok with it, you could always overclock the processor?

mine runs stable at just under 3.8ghz with the stock fan, i dont know how much higher it'll go when i get round to sticking my new cooler on it

and yeah, once photoshop is open everything functions pretty rapidly, sometimes takes a few seconds with pictures that havent been scaled down a tad, but its nothing to worry about

me and alex both use 1gig, we use can photoshop cs and record bands without any trouble and we quite often have 3 way lan parties. so yeah, 1gig is working for both of us anyway

I didn't read this thread properly, when it was in the list, so I dunno if it's stlll relevant.

Damn right you should get the extra RAM instead of the faster processor. There is not a chance in hell that you will notice a 0.2ghz difference. I think you probably will notice the difference of an extra 1 gig of RAM, however.

If there's a huge difference in price between the 3.6 and 3.8ghz processors, its because processors become a total rip off, the closer and closer you get to the top of the range.

start a new thread including as much info as possible on what you got now.

You can get up to 4GB on a commercial PC. I think. I dont know of any MBs with more than four slots or any sticks with more than one GB.

4Gig is the maximum if you're on a 32bit PC anyway. A 32bit processor can't address more than that.
