Video files convertor

Can anyone recommend a software package that allows me to convert .avi files into .mpeg, .mpg etc.?

"aquire" one of thier programs, i use a . . . erm, copy a friend let me borrow, and it works pretty well, some conversions take ages for some reasons tho, only ever had one problem, and that was when i was converting an avi to dvd and the audio went out of sync every time i tried with that file
