Any Linux Experts

Hi there, I'm doing some development in Linux, and I seem to be having some spiking performance problems... Every few hours my performance drops to unusable levels for maybe an hour, the hard drive starts thrashing like crazy, and everything just becomes unbearably slow...

Anyone any idea what could be causing this? Also anyone any suggestions as performance/system monitoring tools that would let me look at the problem myself further?

Liam
