Do XBox games look better on the 360?

This article by Gamespot seems to answer that pretty well.

The images from Halo 2 on the Xbox and Xbox 360 are pretty different with the latter looking pretty damn smoother and prettier than the Xbox equivalent as well as being able to render objects from further afield.

Was the PS2 like that, improving PS games?

I'm pretty sure that the PS2 did improve Playstation games, at least graphically. I can't remember the exact improvements though. I could be wrong, but I don't think that the PS1 supported perspective correct texture mapping, whereas the PS2 definitely does. I think that might have been one of the improvements.

The potential for improvements on the Xbox 360 is larger though, because the game executable has been patched specifically for Xbox 360.

It is the same game disk, but you need the Xbox360 hard drive to run the game. When you run an Xbox title, it downloads a new executable from Xbox live, and stores it on the hard drive.

The games aren't going to have new effects or anything, the Xbox 360 will just allow things like using high-resolution.

it pretty much just stops games looking god-aweful in high res probably.

I can imagine if you hooked up and XBOX or PS2 to a HDTV, most games would look really bad.

Incidently, it's the same way that updates work via Xbox live. When an Xbox game is patched, the new executable, and any required game data is downloaded from Xbox Live.

All the games run differently because the Xbox's Nvidia graphics card has to be emulated on the xbox 360 hardware, Some run better, some run slower. This is made more difficult by the fact the harddisc is now detachable, the xbox games will have been originally coded to read and write dircectly to and from the harddisc's cache, and save directly to the harddisc. The 'patch' will also have to add a piece of code that tells the 360 It can't use the cache anymore to store the next levels data, becasue the harddisc might not be there, Since the games were originally coded to utilize the harddisc cache, since thats not there it can lead to slowdown and other bizzare problems, like events not being triggered.

I wouldn't have thought the patch would have to deal with the abscence of the hard-drive, being as you need the hard-drive to play Xbox games on Xbox 360.
