I found this great wee programme called Sequoia View and it let me find 3GB of shite that DiskCleanup ignores.
I've always wondered how my C: drive always ends up nearly full (it's a 10GB partition) when all I have on it is my Windows folder and my apps. What this app does is scans your drive / partition and shows you graphically as a seriesof squares whats on the disk. the bigger the square the larger the files. It helped me find loads of files that re useless but are hidden deep in windows. e.g my WINDOWS folder had some outlook express files hidden away, a 370MB Outbox file, a 6ooMB Sent items file and also a 200MB Deleted items file. Now, according to Outlook express when i opened it,all these folders were empty! Windows however was keeping a record of these which I didn't need (maybe it was part of system restore or something).Anywhoo, I was able to see where they were and bin them and instantly freed up over a gig! After hunting down the other useless crap I freed up 2.96GB of useles stuff. The best thing is, it can coloutr specific file types differently,so you can see where zip files,or jpegs, avi,psd or wmv files are at a glance. You can also add your own file extensions to the list and choose a colour. So I just thought I'd bring this useful FREE app to your attention. I always thought rd /s c:\ was a good way to clear some disk space on your hard drive.
On a safer note, you can always type subst z:\ "c:\Program Files\" at the command prompt, and pretend that you have a second hard drive |
