I'm no expert compared to a lot of people here, but have you scanned for viruses and spyware?

Same thing happened to me. It was my cd burner causing the problem. Once i disconnected it, it stopped doing it.

Yeah, It is a pain in the ass but often the best thing to do is to disconnect everything and try booting up, at each new boot connecting up another piece of hardware.

becuase now that Wee Rick has mentioned that burner thing, I'm pretty sure I had the same experience whe n I was running Win2000 a few years back.

this is the best idea, if you are reasonably pc savvy then disconnect everything you don't need for the pc to bootup, such as soundcard, cd drives and anything plugged in the back that isn't necessary such as usb cameras and what not. then just see how it works plugging one more thing in each time the pc works fine.

also if you are BIOS savvy, make sure there are no overclocked options on for the processor or memory, since a timing problem could freeze or lag the system if it isn't stable.

apart from that all i can think of is does the system live upto Windows XP's requirements, i'm not sure exactly what they are but i would suggest atleast a decent pentium 2 with atleast 256mb of memory.
