Sound Problems With PC

Ok, so im running windows media play listening to mp3s, and if i open other programs, the music starts to cut and skip, and does so whenever i interact with the program as well (e.g if i click "back" or "go" on internet explorer). can anyone help? (happens with sound in games too)

on-board soundcard?

it could be a sound card driver issue. Make sure the drivers are up to date.

I've no clue what the sound card is? I bought it off my boss and totally i've forgotten.
