Operating System Not Found

Well my dad has done something to his laptop and now it's not booting. It's telling him that the operating system has not been found. I can also hear a strange scratching noise coming from the HD. I've read that this type of error usually means something is wrong with the partition that the OS is installed on, the HD is disconnected somehow or the HD is damaged.

It still have 18 months warranty on it. What do you reckon? I tried using the rescue disc that came with it but that failed too, and i dont want to try anything else in case it voids the warranty, you think it's better just to send it back to get repaired? He's not even backed up his work so that looks like it's a none starter.

I'd send it back, unless you can get the hard drive out without damaging the warranty. Also, some specialist shops (theres some on the internet, dunno about dundee) can pull the data off the damaged hard drive too if theres important work on it which might be worth giving a shot, although i dont know if this will void the warranty. You might also be able to hook your computer up to his laptop and use his as an external drive through firewire or USB (although this probably wont work if the drive is fucked). If its a mac, you can hold down 'T' while it's booting up to turn it into an external drive.
What make is it? If its a Dell dont touch it at all, leave everything the way it is or was when you got it, otherwise they wont take it back at all cos they're a bunch of fannies.
