Recording Software

I haven't even looked into this yet, because too be honest I wouldn't know where to start. I'm looking for preferably free software that allows you to record music that is playing through your PC (if this is even possible).

The idea is if your on a site like Myspace and the music is playing on their player that you can record to some type of music format. Anyone got any idea how possible this is? My friend Tom does it, but I'm sure he uses a mini disc player in the process to, which I do not have. Any help would be appreciated.

there is a thing called StreamRipper for winamp to record radio stations to mp3 format. good for backing up your radio station.....

i've got a couple of things that can do this if you still need it.
