Media Player problems...

when i try to load a .mpg or .mpeg file into Media Player 10 it gives me an error (as does Windows Explorer) and closes both applications down.

its fine with .avi files however.

if i am browsing through video files in explorer and select a video file then it crashes windows explorer before it even gets to media player

if i manage to drag it to say VLC it plays without an issue.

any ideas whats going on? ive uninstalled and re-installed windows media player without success.

sounds like a codec issue, try removing all your codec stuff and download and install CCCP. Have you tried WMP 11?

i have CCCP already installed, had been working fine for ages without any changes to it. pretty happy to try uninstalling it all and restarting it.

WMP11 doesnt seem to work properly on my pc, had issues getting things to load up properly!

UPDATE -

now the crashes has resolved after i removed all registry keys associated with k-lite but media player comes up with an unknown error and wont play ANY files.

yet i can still play anything in VLC

ive re-installed WMP and nothing.

I think there's something about VLC and codecs - It has them all built in or something, so you don't actually need to get codecs for things, that's why I think it's codec related. If it was me, I'd try uninstalling everything to do with media playing - media player, codec packs, vlc etc. then try just installing CCCP and try playing things in media player classic.

Maybe even try graphics and/or soundcard drivers.
