Windows Networks: expertise needed please...
My flatmate and I have our PC's (both XP SP2) on a network sharing a couple of folders and an internet connection.
We both download lots of torrents, pretty much constantly. The problem is, my flatmate gets bandwidth priority so if he is downloading like a mofo and I want to play an online game or something - I have to go through to his room and disable his torrent client so I don't lag. He's cool with this cos we share the connection but it's not always convenient cos he might be sleeping or masturbating, or hell he might even get laid some day. So essentially what I would like is a nice simple way to disable and enable a single process on my flatmate's PC using only my PC. I just don't have a clue how. If there is no easy way and the best option is for me to be able to just 'log on' and have complete control over his PC via mine then that'll do. Again, I just don't know how. I stress... I have 100% permission to access his PC, I already do it manually - I just want to know how to do it remotely. I'm stressing because I already posted on a specialist forum and all I got back was quotes from the data protection act and some friendly advice on the ethics of hacking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

you could use a program like NetLimiter to allow equal bandwidth at all times without having to do anything except install and set it up
or you could use LogMeIn to allow remote access (www.logmein.com) and use the free client... |

On Windows XP, you can enable Remote Desktop on the other machine, and log into it from your machine. It lets you see and interact with their desktop.
Alternatively, you can use a free program called VNC to do the same thing. Remote Desktop is usually the better option over VNC though. If you have admin access to the other machine, then you can stop processes on the other machine, but I've never done it I have no idea how to do it. I'm not sure if it's one of those things where you need a computer set up as a domain controller though. I'd be very surprised if there isn't an open source program that would let you do such a thing though. Maybe you can do it with ssh or something, I dunno. ssh lets you remotely administrate machines. You'd have to look into it more though. Last edited by humndislocation : 19th July 2007 at 05:40 PM. |
