windows vista
what a pain in the ass this is.
had to get a new pc as the other one was failing rapidly but vista is so damn slow at doing anything, even deleting a file takes minutes and you have to go through a couple of pop up boxes for permission, it's driving me nuts. it's like taking a step backwards even though it's a better spec pc. anyone else find this? or are there settings i can adjust so i can just do things without all the permission crap? |

Doesn't sound right. I'm not a Vista user but from what you have described I'd say that there is some sort of configuration issue going on here perhaps.

)Having said that, a friend of mine works as one of the main IT dudes for Egg, and his whole department calls it 'Piss-ta'. It's stupidly slow to do most things, and the 'permissions' box that pops up EVERY FUCKING TIME YOU TRY TO DO ANYTHING is annoying as hell. I'll have to work out how to switch that off on the machines I have to regularly fix. |

It's got ridiculous memory requirements right? A lot of people say its a resource hogging piece of software. I thought the whole point in operating systems was to control a piece of hardware with the minimum fuss.

It's hardly what you could call 'transparent', let's put it that way.
I like the Mac OS cos I barely notice it. I don't like Windows (except 2000, that was good) because I feel like it's in the way of everything I try to do. |

On the permissions thing: you can just turn that off
On the memory thing: It looks like vista is hogging RAM because it actually uses it - it sticks programs you're not using in the memory, just incase you want to use them and it has some fancy thing that guesses what you're going to use. This memory can be instantly overwritten if it's actually needed by anything. There's no point having a lot of RAM if you want it to sit empty all the time. On taking ages to delete files etc... you just need to set up your computer properly - out of the box OEM PCs are usually pretty unusable (or at least full of bloatware) and have been since forever. If I want to delete a file/folder I click on it and press the delete key (or right click and click delete) and it's gone - no "are you sure you want to delete this? are you sure you want to delete this permanently". Also, if you're going to turn off UAC completely then don't complain if you get some kind of malware when "your wee cousin" goes browsing dodgy porn or warez sites. I love my vista. P.S. I'm not saying it's flawless, there's some things that don't work properly but a lot of that's due to lazy hardware companies and the fact that vista's relatively new. I just find, with a little reading and know-how it's pretty easy to completely avoid any of the flaws. Last edited by Rebelius : 28th October 2007 at 11:53 PM. |

In my experience, new windows operating systems are generally pretty shit for drivers for at least 6 months to a year.
I'm getting a new laptop soon though, which means I'm probably going to have to put up with Vista for a while, since it's better than getting one with XP and then having to shell out for Vista later. I've used Vista on my Mum's laptop, and it seemed fine, but I've not really used it for anything in depth yet, and I've heard a lot of horror stories. I'm pretty happy with windows since they moved to NT based versions. Windows 9x/ME were utterly shit though. |

If you're getting it with a new laptop, surely there shouldn't be any driver issues? I've not really had any driver issues and I moved to vista last november on hardware that's now mostly 2-3 years old. Only issues I had was all the nice GUI stuff for the XFi control panel because creative are lazy - but all the features worked at least from release date, maybe not when I was using the Release Candidates, but I can't remember - I've got the onboard sound stuff anyway. I've not really had any software issues either, things like daemon tools, itunes, office (duh), firefox, matlab, maple, gVim, PaintShop Pro and all my games have never had any problems running. |
