right click my computer > select hardware tab > select device manager
under sound, video and games controllers you should see some devices listed, do any have red crosses or ! marks next to them? |

I'm guessing it doesnt work with headphones either?
it shouldn't be this, but... hold down delete when you turn the laptop on, it should go into a setup menu thing and then look through the menus for something like onboard devices - and if there's anything that says AC97 or sound or codec or something, make sure it's enabled. |

do you still have the original CD's that came with it when you bought it?
depending on the company, you should have one labelled either drivers, or system or something similar. |

Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Notebook, Acer TravelMate 2440 Series
you can get audio drivers, try downloading them and installing them. |
