help needed with 2nd cable modem

anyone know if it's possible to have a second cable modem on virgin broadband?
i have cable points upstairs and downstairs and i can't be bothered carrying the xbox up and downstairs all the time. my original modem works upstairs and downstairs so i bought another off ebay that is exactly the same but it won't work on either.
i don't need them to work at the same time it's just to stop the need to move everything all the time.
anyone got any ideas or will it not be possible?

If it doesn't work, can always get a wireless router, and a wireless card, or wireless bridge, and connect that way
