Issue With Firewall Software

i was trying to install F-Secure onto my XP-Pro system and after it asks me to reboot the pc loads up but with just my desktop pic and mouse. nothing else.

after entering Task Man, i ended the SVCHost.exe files and it booted up normally, i uninstalled F-Secure and now its fine.

anyone offer any help?

Did you try a second install? I've never used F-Secure so can't be much help. If it's still messing up just use ZoneAlarm till you get a solution.

just curious, but do you folks think it's really necessary to have a software firewall other than the XP SP2/Vista built in ones, almost everyone seems to connect through a router these days, and almost all newish routers have pretty good hardware firewalls built in.

I don't think I've used anything other than router/windows firewalls since I left home in 2005 and I've not had any troubles yet. That's not to say other people won't, of course - but it seems to me that pretty often Firewalls just cause an extra layer of hassle.

just to clarify: I am in no way telling you to stop using a software firewall.

i dont have a router to connect through, id prefer to have a hardware firewall than use a software one.

what about your motherboard/Network card? a lot of them have hardware firewalls built in too. They can be a pain in the ass too though - I remember the one on nForce2 boards used to cause no end of problems.

you got any other firewalls installed , my experience with F-secure is the program tends to have a seizure when it finds firewalls of any other kind on a comp , infact F-secure decided it didnt like my router on a number of occasions , and is a BASTARD to remove once installed.
