Thinking about digital storage compared to old computers.
I have a Micro SD card in my mobile which is smaller than my thumbnail yet has more storage capacity than my first desktop computer at 2gb.
Some very quick (and conservatively estimated) maths revealed that I am walking around with the equivalent, in storage terms, of more than 46,000 ZX Spectrum home computers in my pocket. My 80gb iPod has the same storage as over one and a half MILLION Zx Spectrums.....One of my external drives could comfortably fit over 7 million Spectrums onto it - more than were ever sold globally I'm guessing. It's mindblowing when you really think about it.... |

I remember when i thought my parents old computer had a lot of storage advice at 4 gb(admitadly over 7 years ago but still)...that is actualy quite crazy the advances made every year in memory technology.

I've got about 2000 times as much ram in my PC now as in my first family PC and 32000 as much as was in my spectrum (which was a 128K model!)
it's totally ridiculous. My family spent something like 1500 on the first PC and it had a 2GB hard drive, 2MB Ram, 66MHz CPU... it's amazing how much things have come along. And if PS3 games ever actually fill up BluRays, think how many spectrum disks that'd be! something stupid like 285000 Last edited by Rebelius : 4th February 2008 at 03:40 PM. |

Ill have to find the advert and take a picture, if i can find it.
Back in 94 we had an Amiga, and would occasionally get Amiga magazines, i remember in one, there being an advert something along the lines of "Upgrade from 512Kb ram to 1Mb ram for only £199!" Which, is mental, love the way technology has advanced, cant wait for transistor harddrives to get cheaper with higher storage capacity ![]() And in terms of PC processors, when they are aiming to get 22nm node CPUs by about 2010 IIRC, which is amazing! 16nm processes are even on the cards. Considering that a carbon atom is ~0.1 nm, it really shows how small things are getting. Sooner or later we'll have CPU's utilising SET's (single electron transistors), which will be as small as we could possibly get! |
