Game / Gaming FAQ and other random info
Ok, I finally decided to do something worthwhile for this forum other than randomly post and scan to stop flamewars. If you have suggestions for this thread, POST IN A DIFFERENT THREAD titled [faq suggestion] or something, keep this for info only.
Individuals Rights in regards to games/the law and stuff Q: I bought this game and it says I only own the license: whats all that about? A: When you walk into a shop and buy the latets FIFA for PS2 you don't actually buy a copy of the game, you buy a license to play own a copy of this game. Thats the bit of paper usually titled "user agreement" or something similar. Q: So what happens if my disc breaks? A: As stated earlier you only bought the right to own a copy of that game, most games companies have a policy where if you contact them and explain your disc is scratched beyond repair/snapped in two/been half chewed by the dog they will send you a new copy if you send them the wrecked disc and a cheque for a small fee, normally about 5quid. Q: cool, so I can get a new copy fo the game, can I prevent having to spend 5quid though, Im cheap/skint A: Well if you read all the user agreement thing you can see that any software you buy the license for, you have the legal right to make ONE backup copy of it in case your original disc dies/breaks/is abducted by aliens. This way you have if your original copy is gone you can still use the game/software as per the license agreement Q: What about copy protection on CD's? A: there is much debate about this, as it stops you making your legal backup copy. If you find copy protection that you can't bypass why not write to the company demanding a free backupcopy providing photocopy of your receipt of purchase or whatnot, if everyone did that they'd get pissed off right? Q: So its ok for me to copy a game and give it to my mate? A: wether you think its "ok" is beside the point, its illegal which is the only thing the law cares about. You are allowed one backup copy for YOU. Q: But that sucks, I dont agree with copyright law A: Well if you really do feel strongly whinge to your local MP, thats if you think theyd care, but if they are indifferent on an issue a few letters from prospective voters may sway them especially in a tight contituency, find out your MP here Alternatively read about or join one of the many groups who wish to change copright law such as: CopyLeft Anti DCMA (US Law) Anti CopyRight Anti Copyright Now
