Yeah man I agree. I've got unfinished stuff myself; a short story and a novel. What I'm saying is one book is enough for me in the style of either coupland or Palahniuk. And I don;t really think he's a wanker, I was just being provocative!

True, but you don't have to be able to write books to be able to criticise them. I wouldn't expect people that criticise video games to be able to make one. Unless they were criticising some really technical part of a game, and they didn't know what they were talking about.

Most of the cheap/'classic' stuff in Fopp is good, but they should sell everything at a decent price.

I've totally forgotten what I was going to say.

So what your implying is that these people, these "critics".Have a get out of jail free card - so to speak - due to their ignorance?
Don't get me wrong I'm all for progress i.e. constructive criticism but just to make a brash sweeping statement like such such an "author is shite"Is just plain right obnoxious.Unless you have the decency to back it up by explaining why you think they are "shite".

People who don't write good books shouldn't write them in the first place!

Fair enough, some people may not like the book even though a lot of people do (ie different tastes), or everyone might regard a book as shit because it is ,well, shit!

I was good at english but would struggle to write a book of any sort. So i do respect writers as its no easy task at all.

But just because i personally haven't written a book doesn't mean im not allowed to think its shit....

its a bit similar to what humandislocation said: -

if i dont like a movie, i can say its crap. Just because i haven't made a movie before doesnt mean i dont have "permission" to not like it. thats just ludicrious.

Same applies to music, and, well everything really.

No, I'm saying that you don't need to be an expert writer in order to have a valid reason to think a book or author is shite, any more than you need to be an expert programmer, artist or game designer in order to have a valid opinion on whether a video game, or all the games produced by a particular developer are shite.

If you're deconstructing the writing, directing, or programming on a very technical level, then you do need to have more of an understanding.

i'm lucky in the fact that most my mates would rather kill themselves than read.
so i get to miss out on any sort of intellectual discussion about literature etc.

Aye, but there's a MASSIVE difference between writing analytically and writing creatively.

I'm partial to the thought that any form of creative output is open to criticism by everyone and anyone.

No but what i also said is that you should at least have the decency to back up your claims. If there is no validity in your statements why should they even be acknowledged?

I don't like Coupland because all his novels seem to be about the same thing but with different characters, if tht makes sense and I don't like Chuck because I simply got fed up of his style. I've read Fight Club - fantastic. I read Haunted, was alright. By the time I started to read Survivor (remember to give that back to Smiffy) I was so bored. I can't finish it.
