It's been on the BBC news website all week that they were gearing up for the launch.

I didn't realise that made them only the third country though.

its been really secretive. They also had a decoy launch pad set up to deter would be terrorists from launching an attack. There has been limited coverage of it, thats why i was surprised this morning to read of it. I knew it was happening, just didnt know when the launch was planned. A few weeks ago it had been cancelled apparently. The launch was flawless.

I have a feeling Britain or India will be next.

I don't think the UK has anything to gain from having our own space program. It's just a lot of expense.

I don't know why they did it to be honest. It's a lot of wasted money and i don't know what it achieves

They could be posturing.

You can bet the States won't be happy that another Communist state have started going into space.

It wasn't all that secretive. It was all over the net that they were going to be doing this.

And whilst it's still a good achievement, China does have a lot of other problems which the money could have been spent on.

It might re-ignite the space-race...

perhaps they are thinking of colonising another planet to deal with the huge over population problem?

well apparently leading heads in the field say that a base can be established on the moon within 20 years making it easier to travel to Mars to establish a colony there. They also say that its possible to terraform both the moon and mars due to the availability of ice to create an atmosphere on both bodies, its exciting stuff. I only hope to still be alive when it all happens.

I kind of agree. I think India has given up on the arms race with Pakistan now that it has allied itself both with China and the US / UK. They've had an active space program for some time now, and i think Brazil has one also; they launched their first satellite last month if i remember correctly.

that would be cool but 20 years seems a bit far fetched, then again im not a member of nasa...

i think countries/nations put so much energy and money into space programs because the first country to get its hands on the moon or another planet has pretty much got control over the rest of the world... or maybe ive been watching too much tv...

Hmmm, that depends, of course, the moon would be prime real estate, but who would it belong to? after all, its not a natural habbitat for humans, so no one can really lay claim to it. Of course, being first to colonise it would be a claim of sorts, but surely the human race as a whole should lay claim to it, and other species too, that we may take along for the trip.

Would the moon be useful in a military kind of way?
