Christian or otherwise...

what do you like and dislike about Christmas? The one thing that makes my blood boil more than ever is spoilt little kids asking for all sorts of things, while their parents continue to reinforce the idea that christmas is about giving and recieving gifts, rather than the true meaning of christmas. Its kinda diluted because of this. What on earth do Popstars advent callanders have to do with Christmas?

How many of you have traditional Christmas' nowadays. I'm not Christian, but i do respect it and every year my folks take the day as a day of rest and family unity. Surely that is one of the main components of Christmas? Has the true meaning of Christmas been lost?

i think it has pretty much been lost. it doesnt help tho when all these toys, pop albums etc get released at this tim eof year solely to cash in on the little kid's "needs". there is so much on offer that they ask for it all. nowadays i couldnt care how much i get or dont get for christmas. i dont see the point in gettin all worked up hopin u get a certain thing.

They invented it to divert attention from the pagan Yule festival, while stealing bits +bobs.

but that *is* the true meaning of christmas. Yule was the olde Celtic festival of gift giving and drinking that lasted a week from dec25th-dec31st. When the Christian started to try and convert the British and wider European populace they shifted Jesus' birthday from september to dec25th to try and create a festival on the same day and to make it easier for people to shift religion without losing their old tradition. Same as they did with Easter.

i love christmas because my whole family is together and we get a good proper meal together... every year though the one thing that spoils it is the opening of the presents... mostly because in my family we dont ask for christmas presents (as its not the done thing, birthdays are for presents, christmas is for little gifts) so all the wee packages under the tree contain stuff that isnt exactly special, and my younger sister gets upset because she didnt get anything good, and then she goes in a huff and my parents get annoyed...

i'd prefer the gifts to be opened the next day or something, if theyre necessary at all...

although maybe i just think that because my birthday is only 25 days before christmas so ive just had my last round of presents...

I have a vague recollection of "there were shepherds in that part of the country" , if it were decemeber there would not have been shepherds there hence the date change, or am I just talking bollox ?

I dont think there is a record of a census around that time either, although I could be wrong on that
