haven't you seen LOTR? alex has loads of friends; that elf chap, the big rugged king man, gandalf........shame he can never kill to the same standard as the elf. seems quite bitter. no surprise, living in dundee and being humiliated by Orlando Bloom must be tough for anyone. we've all been there.

ahh but the elf....you would like. it's the hair that does it for me. have u noticed that the dwarf walks like alex as well? im convinced it's him- he just tidies up a bit to organise his gigs and generally attempt to co-ordinate dundee's two bit shambles of a scene.

theres no need for that rob, i accept you are probably meaning it as a joke but a lot of people put in a lot of work to try and make the dundee "scene" a success, ask yourself WHAT DO YOU DO TO HELP THE SCENE??? before you are gonna slag people off for what they do, free of charge may i add!, just think about it from alexs point of view, how many times has he given YOU a gig, yes it was probably meant as a joke but the message was still there! STUMP UP OR SHUT UP!

like to note that it wasn't alex that is the problem; he clearly tries his best to incorporate as many bands into his gigs as possible, and brings in bands from outside. so alex (beatnik in general): good. yeah? i was referring to the hopelessness of trying to get some of these people to co-operate when they are so narrow mindedly operating within their set ideas and mindset. and so much of dundee's scene revolves around people a) going to gigs to get pished or b) cos their mates are playing and while the latter is acceptable to some degree it does not build a healthy scene based on music. looking around this website one will find plenty of examples of over- opinionated people willing to take a pop at others in a completely serious way just because they are not exactly the same as them. Also, the fact that so many bands lack originality or conviction (or just good old talent) also detracts from any worth our town can have in claiming a scene (and before you say anything i know bands i have played in have suffered from this and am not absolving myself of this). without doubt there is potential for growth and for this scene to flourish, but for now there is not a very strong scene in dundee.

p.s. mike, don't talk condescendingly to me again please.

p.s

p.s
i wasnt being condescending, i was just making a point alot of people give bands in dundee shit when its not any help to them, and alex also gets a lot of shit when he is a great guy who does this cos he wants to! how many people actually put on gigs off their own backs anymore and dont look to make money and sometimes even run at a loss and have to put up wi assholes destroying toilets etc and still keep going! yeah ok i accept that you think the same about alex and beatnic as i do, but there was still no need for a comment about the scene, what good does it do?

as far as bands in dundee being shit i think you are being a wee bitty selective about who you listen to.............. MTS signed, opened for deftones..............boss koala, regarded by many as a major up and coming band, as with spyamp, 1 inch volcano, tearjerk and misled youth, snow patrol came out of dundee..there have been loadsa dundee acts that have made it big in previous years, i think the point is if you are pissed of with the dundee scene then get outa dundee and play elsewhere, if you feel your music is strong enough(and i dont doubt that) then go play in glasgow edinburgh perth aberdeen, do what the above bands have done, mature as a group and show that there is life in the dundee "scene" even if it s growing outside of dundee!

im not trying to put anyone down but for every person that slags off the dundee scene ask yourself how many times have you played outside of dundee, or start asking yourself if the dundee scene is so shit then why are you playing a gig every second week in dundee, if the dundee scene is so shit why is the likes of gav revolt bringing in great bands!? and finally what can YOU do to improve it?

this is not a condescending message its just plain fact, i love dundee, and alot of the bands that play in dundee! again STUMP UP OR SHUT UP!

half of it is not the bands. gav is bringing in excellent bands this is true, and there are good bands in dundee, there is no doubt of that. obviously im not suggesting that im or my band is good enough to get out and make it yet and obviously we want to play in dundee; this is our home. but the crowds are so dull and uninspired and thus uninspiring to the bands playing; even for the best quality bands. there is the occasional moment of crowd movement or whatever but for the most part everyone stands stationary and stares. and im not just speaking on my part here, because i dont want to leave myself open to "they dont move cos your band are shite" but even for Allergo and Boss Koala there are still a lot of blank expressions and rooted feet. and the lack of cross pollination between genres is not helpful either, for example there are gigs that are "punk gigs" and gigs that are "metal gigs" and while this is ok in a big city dundee does not have the gig going populace to keep this kind of seperation viable, leading to small audiences (revoltfest) in spite of amazing bands and narrow mindedness as mentioned before. of course there are the Boss Koala's and the Allergo's (ok, not strictly dundee but local anyway) but how many derivative duds or promising splits are there for every one of these?

but a comment slagging off fans in dundee is surely gonna inspre them to come to your gigs! whenever i have done the promotion for a gig(im talkin about times of the old wstie just before it closed) we absolutely covered dundee in flyers posters stickers you name it we did it, it cost a bit but we did put 120 people in the westie that night!

i have found that its not just the attitudes of people at gigs its the not knowing, why has beatnic been such a success? because it is a constant its every friday night, its cheap, its a good atmosphere!

i think you make an excellent point about punk/metal gigs you are rightt we have to go back to basics and i know people call them punk vs metal we should be having more of them cos they ALWAYS do well! we should start saying lets book gigs 6 weeks in advance where possible them concentrate on advertising! it doesnt cost much for 500 photocopies of posters! it dont cost anything to ask kj to put up a poster n the frontpage of ugs! there are many places in the town where ppl can advertise gigs, the guys at ozzys let ya put up posters the guys at effective edge let ya put up posters, why not spend £20 (£15 if ya come see me) and get a 100 spindle of cds then rather than always advertising with a shitty flyer take the hit and advertise using a cd, yeahso its gonna cost but if you keep filling a venue then u start to get paid! advertise on the front of the disk in marker pen when an where etc! its an original idea!

dont slag off fans because the ones that are always there is what will keep your band alive! i know what its like to play a gig to 10 people cos of no advertising and its not fun!

stop looking for excuses and start looking for ideas if you use all this negative energy im sure you will come up with some good ideas when u start using it in a positive way! for now chill!

give me a shout if ya wanna arrange a gig cos i hear good thiongs about your band, iain knows me and cb has my number! or pm me to keep discussing this, remember this thread was originally poking fun at alexs avatar!
