I had a house fire on Friday night. I lost everything - all I have to my name are the clothes I'm wearing...and ironically a copy of Jack Kerouac's 'On The Road'.

I was staying at my girlfriends, but I don't want to be a charity case. I've been sleeping on my kitchen floor but the smoke is still lingering, which can't be good for my lungs.

At least shes letting you stay over and that. i dont think you should be sleeping in your kitchen, or even in your home until its safe to do so. sounds like a pretty major fire.
