Woman jailed after keeping 271 pets
Friday 10 June 2005 03:37pm
Woman jailed after keeping 271 pets A woman who was obsessed with collecting animals and kept 271 pets crammed in her cottage has been jailed for three months. Rosalind Gregson, 55, showed no emotion as she was jailed and disqualified from keeping animals for life, after pleading guilty to nine specimen counts of causing unreasonable suffering to animals at a hearing last month. The animals, mostly dogs, were emaciated, often covered in faeces and urine, and suffering from infections and injuries. Nine of the animals had to be put down shortly after RSPCA inspectors removed them from her home off Lindeth Road in Silverdale, Lancashire. Gregson, who lived in the house with her husband Alan, had initially denied 49 counts of failing to provide the animals with necessary care and attention. But in May, at Preston Magistrates' Court, she changed her plea and admitted nine counts of causing them unreasonable suffering. The nine charges referred to dogs - two Yorkshire terriers, three Lhaso Apsos, three Shih Tzu and one Old English sheepdog. Five of these animals had been so mistreated they had to be put down. At Preston Magistrates' Court, Ann-Marie Gregory, defending, told the court Gregson's obsessive animal collecting was triggered when her son died from a drug overdose 15 years ago. She said: "She never had any counselling, she never had any way of dealing with the pain or loss. That appeared to be the trigger factor in her beginning to collect a large number of animals." The court had heard Gregson kept her animals in dark, dusty, dirty conditions with little water or food and little ventilation. When the RSPCA visited Gregson's home in September 2003 they were confronted with more animals than they had seen in one house before. The officers discovered 246 dogs, 16 birds, five cats, two kittens, a rabbit and a chinchilla. RSPCA officer Sarah Hayland said when she entered the property her eyes watered and she found it difficult to breathe. Asked why there were so many, Gregson said: "Because it got out of hand, its just an obsession, I couldn't stop." I'm sure I've seen this somewhere before but I dunno where it was, it might not've been on UGS.
Anyway, that's a... well it's certainly a bizarre way to cope with your sons death. And 2 kittens?! But as it was established in Johnny's thread, kittens are the greatest things ever! Poor animals ![]() |

I couldn't handle seeing an animal in a terrible state, i would be a wreck. I really can't stand things like that. When i hear stories about animal cruelty it stays with me all day, and i feel terrible.

Probe as 352 animals found at house RSPCA staff are examining 352 animals found living at a "residential premises". Officials said the animals - which included 131 dogs, 48 cats, 80 rabbits and 86 guinea pigs - were discovered at a property in Cromer, Norfolk. A spokeswoman said a person had been cautioned by the RSPCA following the discovery. She said vets were now examining the animals at a holding centre. "The holding centre has been set up to deal with the animals," the spokeswoman said. ''Staff have been working around the clock. "Due to the condition in which they were found some of the animals are likely to be euthanised." The RSPCA has not given the precise location of where the animals were found and the spokeswoman would not say whether they were living in a house or on a farm. More details were expected to be released later. She added: "It is too early to say whether any of the animals will be available for rehoming." Officials said an investigation was now under way and inspectors were gathering evidence about the background to the discovery of the animals.
