I think, as long as you discipline your OWN children as they are growing up then that should be your main concern.
And by discipline I don't mean smacking them around if they do something wrong. I think this leads them to think that if someone has been bad to you then it's alright to hit them, because bad behaviour = physical punishment.

There are always going to be bad neglective parents no matter what age people have children or their personal circumstances.

As for the way children used to act years ago, my parents and grandparents used to be beaten if they misbehaved, and yes it may have made them stay in line, but my mum can recall times when she was 8 or 9 and her mum was smacking her around the head for something so stupid like stealing a tin of pears from a cupboard.
Yep same with my mum, she got a thump across the face from her dad when she was just a wee thing cos she helped herself to a biscuit! It wasnt always great back then either i guess.

I don't agree with beating your kids up, but I do agree with smacking. I was smacked as a kid, and I think it worked out fine. I knew if I really crossed the line, I'd get a smack for it, and it was a real deterrent to being a little shit, and no, it didn't teach me that violence was an acceptable way to solve problems. I don't believe all this "time-out", or "you are grounded, go to your room where your xbox is" nonsense really works, to be honest.

Awaits whiny "OMG HOW COULD U IF I HAD A PROBLEM WITH U WUD THAT MAKE IT OK TO SMACK U LOL"/"BUT U R SAYING TO UR KID DONT HIT UR SISTER, BUT THEN U R HITTING THEM WITCH MAKES U A HYPOCRICTE LOL" responses.

Well I didn't mean in every situation. I just find it disturbing seeing someone smacking a young child, as in under 5. Most of they time they don't understand.
And I think that it's when you start hitting them alot a really young age that they find it acceptable to do it to other children.
I will admit I have slapped my son across the hand when he has really not paid attention to what I am saying, admittedly he is only 18 months, and it made me more upset than him.
He knows what no means now though so he ignores me and thinks it is a game, and he knows already how to push my buttons.

I think my mum only ever hit me twice as I was growing up, she was frightening enough without needing too. And those times were when I was really crossing the line. Everyone has different ways, I am just hoping that I will just be able to say to my children "NO" and then give them that 'look' and they will shit their pants.

I dunno, I think sometimes with children under 5, you need to communicate to them that something is bad/dangerous, and they're too young to understand words.

If a small child is about to stick its fnigers in a socket, give their fingers a wee smack and they won't do it again. I didn't.

I got my backside smacked a few times when i was wee because i was an evil little shite but same as Brian it did me good cos i knew not to do it again and it made me behave myself. I remember every occasion when i got smacked cos it wasnt often and it was deserved. The thought of a sore arse is scarier than getting sent to your room! haha

Brian, you hit the nail on the head.

I also used to get smaked as a child and it sorted me out fine.

agreed.

to me there is a difference between smacking a child and beating them, even with smacks. If a parents gives a short, reasonably mild smack the child will eventually learn. I know if i did anything wrong i'd get a hiding, nothing malicious but enough to put me off trouble. Also made me stufy harder

If a kid doesn't "fear" getting in trouble they will naturually get away with what they can.

yeah i mean,,,my grandad used to hit my mum over her arse with the rubber side of a slipper and she always tells me that she hated it and she would be cautious of stepping out of line again. now my mum treated us the same (me and my sisters) and we have turned out fine. we knew that if we did something wrong we were gonna get smacked for it,,,so we just didnt bother, but when kids are getting beaten everyday for doing something as petty as stealing a biscuit thats when things get out of control, and thats when kids start to get the message that if someone does one thing wrong they should be beaten for it, hence the violence that is all around us these days.
and i dont think we can give parents all the blame here, one, its not just neds who have kids, its not as if teens go out of their way to become pregnant, mistakes can be made and the main reason for that, in my opinion is alcohol, people get drunk and just go for it!! which brings me on to my next point, how many of you have little bros and sisters that like the same music, or talk the same as you, or ask to borrow your stuff all the time? thats coz they want to be older and just like you, and what a good example we are eh?
going out and getting drunk and acting like arses ourselfes. so maybe its not the parents who we should blame (not entirely anyway) and maybe we should look a bit closer to home when it comes to kids drinking and smoking.
and i for one wear glasses, and they are very hip and trendy,,,,,or not, whatever, lol

I wouldn't worry about our genetics though. I think genetic engineering will cure defects like people being short sighted within the next two centuries at least (although probably a hell of a lot earlier than that). I imagine there will still be some people that refuse to have their children genetically engineered though.

To be fair though, a lot of intelligent people wear glasses, like scienticians and all that like. If we killed them all off then there'd be less sciences and fings and I would be sad.
Heres the cycle that destroyed the world:

Ned has first kid at 19
Ned has a further 3 kids by the time she is 23
Father of Neds child leaves, and fathers a further 8 children in his life
Ned's daughter has first kid at 13
Neds daughter has further 3 kids by age 18

And it all just goes in a circle, with a younger pregnancy age and even more multiplication. until....

Neds daughter's daughters' daughter has further 14 kids by the age of 16

Also, the common sense, brain cells and use of condoms lessen with each generation.

i agree with most of what shite puss says. when i was younger the area i lived in wasnt too bad but when u look at that place now its full of neds drinking in the street and shouting at ppl who walk past. the place itself is unbelievable, me and my mum left that area when i was 11 due to some1 bein killed in a 'gang fight'. i have really good memories of that area as well but everytime ive went back its just saddened me at how downhill its went. im not just blaming this on the ppl that live there though, but the majority of them have really turned that area into the bronxs of dundee.

in my opinion, society changes all the time due to ppl's attitudes changing and its almost inevitable that shit things are happening in our life time that shock and disgust us. but i think this is true for every generation. i mean, ppl 50 years ago would be outraged at 14 yr old girls on the pill, or 6yr old wee boys swearing and screaming at there parents. It's just society evolving, into what i dont know.
