Exploding pot lids!!!!
Ok, so i hear a popping sound from my Kitchen and i went through to see if the eggs i was cooking had maybe exploded but they were intact. Avril then opened the cupboard door to find a glass potlid shattered like a bus shelter window do if broken, Into hundreds of peices still sitting together. I aint being funny but aint they made to withstand some high degree of heat and surely a warmed up room couldn't of cause that?
Any smart people here, maybe explain it? Edit: I felt the other glass lid in the cupboad, its the same size roughly, and that one was avaragly cold. Last edited by Wee_rick : 9th March 2006 at 05:25 PM. |

it could have been down to the old phenomenon of frequencies, like that old parody of when an opera singer hits the high notes all the windows and tumblers in the theatre shatter.
i just tried to work out why that happens in my head (cos i'm too lazy to google) and i thought it was down to the sound/light/radio waves causing all the molecules in the glass to move about, but all that would do is cause the glass to heat up and melt. like what microwaves do. maybe the noise frequency thing causes molecules in certain materials to move instantaneously instead of gradually, and thus shattering objects instead of melting them. next time my steak bake goes cold i'm gonna get my mate to sing to it and just hope it doesn't explode like some kind of meat and pastry grenade. |

Every thing has a resonant frequency, a frequency at which it'll absorb more energy, than at any other frequency. If a note is at the resonant frequency of the glass is played, loud and strong enough, then eventually the glass will absorb so much energy, that the strength of the vibration is stronger than the forces that keep the glass together.
I'm sure I heard somewhere that it's impossible for an opera singer to shatter a glass that's made of glass though, it has to be crystal. |

Thats why you get rattles in your car that start at just over 40mph and stop at 42mph (as an example). The road's vibrating the car at it's resonant frequency. |
