Dundee musician burnt in house fire

This mornings Courier reported on yesterday's house fire up the Forfar Road and says that a 21 year old musician was badly burnt.

The surname is Guyan? I'm not sure on the spelling. Is he not in a local metal band? They do Pantera covers?

Anyway, whoever he is lets wish him a speedy recovery and hope he can get back to playing again soon.

Musician in fire horror

A PROMISING Dundee musician’s career was hanging in the balance last night after he suffered severe burns to his arms and hands during a breakfast time blaze.

Christopher Guyan (21) was in a serious condition in Ninewells Hospital after waking up in a burning bed to discover the first floor of his family home was ablaze and the flames were spreading.

He was trapped with his brother Grant (20) who managed to climb out of his bedroom window and scaled his way down the rear of the house at the corner of Clepington Road and Forfar Road, suffering only minor injuries. Christopher—a music student who plays guitar in local band Hellbound—was unable to get to the window of his brother’s adjoining bedroom and ran downstairs in blind panic with his hair and body on fire.

His parents, Bill and Liz Guyan, last night said they were praying Christopher makes a full recovery and is able to play the guitar again.

“I was in the throes of getting dressed when Christopher ran downstairs with his hair on fire,” said Mrs Guyan.

She had been alerted to the blaze seconds earlier when the smoke detector activated.

“He’d woken up with his bed on fire. His body was badly burnt and he was hysterical.

“Christopher’s arms and hands have been badly burned and his hair’s been cut off. It’s going to take a couple of months until he’s out of the woods.

“It’s like a bad dream. I haven’t come to terms with it yet.”

Mr Guyan, who was at work at the time, said, “He’s a guitarist in a band. Music is his life. We’re just praying he’s okay and hoping beyond hope that he can play again.”

Younger brother Grant, a store assistant at B&Q in Kingsway East, has been detained in a short stay ward at Ninwells Hospital with minor injuries.

“He’s got very slight injuries, smoke inhalation and cuts and bruises,” said Mrs Guyan. “Grant was in the adjoining bedroom and got out the window and on to the roof.

“Christopher was thinking about his brother and tried to get into his room. He got into his brother’s room and if he’d also got to the window he might have escaped serious injury. But the smoke was too thick and he was in a blind panic, so he turned back, ran through his room and downstairs.”

Mrs Guyan said a smouldering cigarette butt had caused the fire.

Mr and Mrs Guyan paid tribute to the passers-by who helped Grant down from the roof and praised the efforts of emergency services and hospital staff.

A spokeswoman for NHS Tayside said, “The condition of one brother is comfortable but the other is serious.”

It is believed Christopher will be transferred to a specialist burns unit.

The fire was described as a “very serious” incident by assistant divisional fire officer Ron Massie, who confirmed it would now be the subject of a thorough investigation.

I only read the small bit on the front page before I left for work and I didn't notice a band name on it.

I was on the way to work ysterday morning when this was happening, police redirected us.

This morning, approximately 8:30 am, the Guyan household was struck by a serious top floor house fire - It's completely gutted Guyan's room and smoke damaged Grant's room but more seriously, left Guyan with burns from the waist up.....most seriously on his hands - worst possible case senario for any guitarist. He's been transferred to a burn unit in Glasgow and is probably being pumped full of morphine as I speak.

It's too soon to tell how long he's gonna be healing for, or even how long he'll be in hospital for, for that matter - but we're talking months, possibly a year.

.....over the next while, we're going to show our support by starting a fund towards equipment for him, as he's lost everything in his room in the fire....

the takings from the Balcony gig on April 21st are going straight towards this fund - Grant's going to ask at his work and we're also going to have a whip-around of friends and well-wishers to see if they want to contribute anything.

I know for a fact he'll be devestated about missing out on the forthcoming gigs.....Anthrax, Cannibal Corpse, Down (that's a real bastard to miss) and even the Download Festival we all so greatly anticipate. I've contacted Anthrax to see if they can sign something for him, any kind of correspondance, so hopefully they'll reply to that.

Thats terrible news,heard something about it this morning but had no idea how serious it was.He must be going through hell aswell not knowing if he will be able to pick his guitar up and play again.

Are there any plans for some kind of fund raiser concert etc for him?

I spoke to Scott the bassist from Hellbound yesterday and they are still going ahead with the gig on the 21st of April, all money is going towards getting him a new guitar/equiptment. I'm also trying to raise some money to put towards it by arranging a car boot sale so if anyone has any stuuf that would be worth selling and you dont need then give me a shout. Will a little help from my pal shiona we should be able to get a decent amount of money.

Plus grant (guyans bro) is goign to put a collection around his work. I feel really bad as I havent seen Guyan in ages and this is such an awful thing to happen to a person, especially since all he ever does is play guitar. Hopefully we can lighten the blow of whats happened.
