It's not just in case of invasion, in theory it's also intended to give the people the ability to fight the government, in the event that the government becomes a dictatorship.

My understanding is that that "Assault Weapons Ban" doesn't actually cover assault rifles (which are usually automatic)

I have noticed , not necessarily on the UGS , but lets call it a general opinion i have experienced , that people think that the legality and structure of gun ownership/use in the US is outrageous , but heres the question ... does it actually make them more violent , because i have heard of some even more brutal shit going on on the streets of scotland that put more worry in me than anyone owning a gun ..

Is there a thread about this coz i reckon thats a good discussion topic (although if its a can of worms i apologise).
After the assault rifle ban in America there was actualy very little decrease in violant organised crime.

id say the streets of Sao Paolo, and most of southern america, would be more dangerous.

Does having relaxed gun laws make you more violent? id so no.

If guns were as easy to own in this country would it be stabbings thats making the headlines? again, ill say no.

I don't think gun ownership would work over here, I think the whole chav/ned culture over here is something that's a bit different from the US. I could see neds shooting people for a laugh, because a lot of them have absolutely no regard for other peoples' lives. (for evidence of this, see neds who think it's hilarious to attack someone and stamp repeatedly on their head)

On the other hand, I think on sites like this, where people tend to be a bit more left wing, there's a lot of hysteria regarding America's attitude to guns. The attitude that any American advocating the right to own guns, is completely insane, or a redneck, seems to be quite common.

wish it was a little bit more up to date but still.

Im glad we have strict gun control laws here. I dont feel any less safe going to bed without a firearm nearby on the off chance someone breaks into my home. Different States, and different counties within those States in America all have huuugely different views and practices of gun ownership and control. I think you are qite right to say that over here we do have a stereotypical image of a 'gun nut' American and thats far from the truth. but for me personaly, living in a culture were we have no common ownership of firearms, i dont see why we(the common public at least)would need them.
