The new law will outlaw pornography featuring any of the following:

• An act which threatens or appears to threaten a person's life
• An act which results in or appears to result in serious injury to a person's anus, breasts or genitals
• An act which involves or appears to involve sexual interference with a human corpse
• A person performing or appearing to perform an act of intercourse or oral sex with an animal

The most worrying part is in the explanitory notes for the bill which state that if an act is sufficiently extreme a judge can decide that, even if the participants consented, such consent is not valid in the eyes of the law and the activity is illegal.
For example, if you engage in consensual knife/cutting-play a judge can decide that because in his eyes a "reasonable" person would not consent to such activity that your or your partner's consent is not legally valid.

well isn't it illegal to kill yourself? even if you "consent" to it? or even to ask someone else to kill you.

I really can't see why people have a problem with violent pornography being illegal.

the bill is pretty weirdly worded

"any act which appears to cause severe injury to anus, breasts..."

does that mean gay porn is outlawed?

The law was brought about because a woman was killed by a guy who liked violent porn, how many people are killed because of drink drivers? lets ban cars and alcohol.

No, not in the UK. That's just a common misconception.
It's illegal to assist a suicide, though, and it's illegal to try to talk someone into suicide.

That only applies to pornography, which is defined in the bill as any material "whose sole or major purpose is to produce sexual arousal".

With regard to being unable to legally consent to being assaulted or injured in the UK, exceptions are made to sports and other things, the upkeep of which are "in the public interest".

Mental.

The consent issue is nothing new though. It's been established that if something is held to be against the commonly accepted moral values of society as a whole (the old "reasonable person" chestnut as you pointed out) then whether or not that act is consensual is of little relevance.

That said, this bill does seem a bit regressive. Surely we've established by now that just by watching something doesn't make you more likely to actually recreate those events? It's the fucking daft violent video games/movies argument all over again.

If it's staged in such a way that its primary or major purpose is to produce sexual arousal, then yes.
