Book sleeves

I've got a few good books, but the one thing that pisses me off when reading and storing them is the sleeves that you get on the hardback books. Who bins them and who keeps them? I'm thinking about binning them all but it might be better just to store them somewhere. Possibly my most useless topic ever but just curious as to who bins them and who keeps them.

They also give me paper cuts.

Nooo you've got to keep them! I'm a total book freak. I hate broken spines, people turning over pages etc. It's so MESSY.

Plus, the covers are really useful to hold your place in the book. And they're pretty.

I hate them. I take them off when I'm reading them and put them in place of the book on the shelf. I usually take the library covers off too but then I feel bad about that because it isn't my book.

I wouldn't bin them because the ones underneath are usually boring and look rubbish on the shelf.

YES! I feel so sad when I get a book and it is totally dog eared and someone has folded it in half because they are too shit to read a book with two hands.

On the smaller books they do serve as good bookmarks, but on larger books they are just useless. I think the only purpose they really serve is to protect the hard cover underneath from spillages and stuff.

They're good protectors. I have a habit of leaving books piled on my desk instead of putting them away, am also a bit of a clutz and a big tea drinker. Things would get quickly stained were it not for the beautiful glossy covers!
I don't have many hardbacks though. Too poor.

I take them off and put them in a drawer or something, usually fully intending to put them back on after I've finished reading, but then I usually forget and they end up getting ruined and I bin them.

I also don't like breaking the spines and folding pages and stuff but it doesn't bother me at all if someone else does - as long as they don't make a book unreadable then what's the point in keeping it in pristine condition? Unless it's a first edition or something that's likely to be of some kind of value somewhere down the line.

Just makes them last longer. Cracked spines really bug me, it's a total pet hate.

how does it make them last longer though? my copy of LOTR is cracked and dog-eared, has sellotape holding the cover on, but is still perfectly readable. It was printed in '76 and has been read about 30 times.

Well then i just enjoy looking after my things and keeping them nice! As soon as the spine cracks badly the pages start falling out and it's so irritating to try and read!

It's no stated fact, it's opinion. But surely it's gotta be widely accepted that books are going to be easier to read, for longer if they're well looked after? Don't make out i'm talking complete nonsense!

I don't like reading hardback books at all, they're too clumpy. Also, all of my books are a bit tattered with folded pages and a bit misshapen from bath reading.

I don't agree that it's easier to read a book if it's in perfect condition, especially if you're reading it and trying to keep it that way. I've seen my sister reading a book with it only open about 45degrees so that she wouldn't break the spine - surely it's easier to read if it's fully open on your lap and the light can actually get into it.

I'm never going to sell most of my books so as long as they're readable then it doesn't bother me a bit.

If I was reading someone else's book, I wouldn't break it right open or anything and I never fold pages since it's so easy to use a bookmark or some other piece of paper I've got lying around.

Not everyone's so anal about it they take enjoyment out of the reading itself. :P
The spine's only really break if you fold the book right out at 180 degrees, which is unecessary/leave it folder upside down like that to bookmark it/leave it sitting at one page for a looong time. From my experience. I tend to blitz through books in a day or two, in which case it's pretty impossible to break the spine unless you really try/read in an unusual way. In my opinion only!
